I know about the online features of the registered version of GameMaker, but so far I've only seen it work from IP to IP. Is there anyway of having multiple connections which you add to a 'buddy list' of some sort, or even a way of connecting to a server with it?

To the first -- yes, the easiest way would be to make a server of some sort.

To the second -- yes, a server is just a specific computer you connect to IP to IP.

Simply enough, just get a server running a server program you make, and have your client send a username/password to it. If the server recognizes them, add their IP along with their name on the server's list of people who're online. The server needs to only serve as a go-between so that the player's programs can get eachother's IPs without the players doing it themselves.

I recommend using multimedia fusion with the moosock extension. you can even make your own server, so you know what can be done and how to do it, and its easier than you think.
