Well, my first (soon-to-be) publically released hack (or second, if you discount a fiasco from about two years ago -- but for the love of God, let's forget about that) is of SMB3 and is titled "The Super Mario Bros. in the Mystery of the Flying Fish."

I'm calling this a "mini-hack" because there is only going to be one world. Quite frankly, I lose interest in PLAYING most hacks after around one world, much less MAKING them. Plus the theme of the hack is good for about a world, but would definitely run thin quickly if it went on for two worlds or more, so I figured this was the best route.

Unfortunately, I'm waiting for someone (anyone!) to respond to my question in the SMB3 thread, and the question is kind of important -- as such, I can't really release it quite yet, since it's literally unbeatable until I figure out what I did.

There are a few other bugs I hope I can work out as well, and -- unfortunately -- the ending is, as far as I can see, going to remain relatively unchanged, since know nothing about ASM and imagine that overhauling the ending sequence to fit with it is going to require some kind of assembly manipulation.

Anyway, down to the interesting bits:

While Mario is romping through the Mushroom Kingdom's royal water fountains one day, he is witness to a mysterious phenomenon: the fish from around the kingdom begin to take flight! It's up to the Mario Brothers to find out what is responsible (I wonder...) and stop it before the local fish markets are all dried up!

So anyway, that's the loosest story I could come up with that incorporated the theme of the hack. In all honesty? I came up with the theme and title (which I thought was pretty damned funny) and eventually BSed a story out of it! But that's not important -- its' a fun hack, regardless!

I would rate this as pretty damned challenging; even I found myself swearing at my computer more than once playing through it. But it's not impossible, and it never gets so frustrating that it's not fun anymore.

As you may have guessed, every level features fish, and -- because there just weren't enough in the original SMB3 -- they all auto-scroll.

But anyway, this is getting waaay to frigging long-winded, so I'll just wrap it up with a bunch of screen shots and a plea: anyone who thinks it looks remotely interesting or fun help me figure out how to fix it so it can finally be released!

Thanks,

PSlugworth

Awesome. I love the mini-hack idea. If more people made them, romhacking would be in a better situation.

I agree with ETG on that, we could stand for more small hacks that get done than gigantic projects that fade out of existance (as gigantic projects that don't fade out of existance aren't all that realistic now are they?).

The roguelike development community started a thing where developers would attempt to code an entire game in seven days, and it completely re-envigorated the community. We could sponsor something similar for hacks.

Um, the hack sounds interesting when you read the story to it. But I imagine alot will miss that. Why not have a intro level that will take you right to peaches letter after you beat it. That way you can type out a letter or something to explaint eh story.

Thanks for all the positive comments, guys.

But as for going directly to the letter from the princess after the first level, well... it's a really good idea, but I wouldn't even know where to begin doing that! It would take a lot of ASM, I'd assume, and again, I don't even have the faintest idea of how to manipulate anything ASM related. I understand the concept of it, but the only languages I can decipher (and even then, only half the time) are HTML and BASIC -- you know, the cowardly stuff.

This hack looks good. But some of the palettes could be tweaked a bit.

How to end it O_o. How about after the world you got to find a whistle in the last level which warps you to the warp world and you can go to world 8 at the final level to play the final level. O_o Sounds like it would work.

Yes I agree with that ETG, and PSlugworth, this hack really looks good. Keep up with the good work, I like the Cheep Cheep on the title screen.

That's a weird thing to criticize, don't you think?

I would definitely play this. I really like your idea of a mini hack (has this been done before? not that iit's important), and I know I wouldnt sit through all eight levels for a hack on the computer. Knowings it's short, and completed, makes it more appealing.
I also like how you came up with a theme for it, it makes it stand out from just another SMB3 hack.
I'd play this.

Hate to bump an old thread, but it seemed to make as much sense (if not more) to reply to it than to make a new one about the same thing.

Anyway, after months of wait, the hack none of you have been waiting for is finally here!

So yeah, I guess waiting three months to release it kind of defeated my whole concept of making it a "mini-hack" in the first place, but at least I didn't put it on "permanent ice," right? Eugh, I hate that phrase... so many half-way decent-to-amazing hacks wasted by it...

Anyway, all that aside, here it is, complete in IPS for your patching pleasure (for use only with US SMB3 PRG 0 ROM).

As far as I have tested, it's complete and bug free, including a somewhat original ending (considering the most advanced thing I know how to edit is hex).

If anyone sees anything nutty while they're playing, or if it just doesn't work (and it damn well better), just send me a line and I'll see what the devil is wrong with it.

Well, anyway, here you go, ladies and yentlemen:

I loved your hack. Very challenging because of the scrolling but it's been awhile since I had a challenge. Look me go over a few comments.

1. I like the flying fish, they're very annpying to kill in the air or underwater and the scrolling makes it more challenging. I learned the hard way that the green flying fish in the air can't be killed by a jump.

2. I like how you used most of the game music in the hack. It's been awhile since I played SMB3 on the NES so I haven't heard the original music in awhile.

3. The Boss Bass was genius to replace the hammer bros. You had to hit it with the blue blocks in the water to kill it and the fact that there are only 4 blocks makes this battle difficult.

And a spoiler for something that appears at the end of the hack that I want to say.

Spoiler:
That was a big surprise that Bowser appeared at the end. I wasn't expecting him in this hack. Plus, the arena is much harder because you want him to fall in one of the pits on the side of the arena but the waterfall current is too strong for Mario so you have to be constantly pressing the A button to stay alive. That and the great old Bowser battle music was awesome.

I got one more question but I rather PM you about it.

[edit by BMF]
Fixed the spoiler tag.

I remember this hack, the pics did look promising, I downloaded the hack but I'm not gonna play it till I come back from work later on today. I'm sure I'll enjoy it.

I really should work on my SMB3.

Wow, thanks for that recommendation!

I just played through the patched version of the game, though, and found something strange...

When I play through my original ROM, the last pipe in the castle sends you exiting from a pipe in the ceiling of the next room.

When I play the patched version, Mario comes up from the middle of the floor as though it were a pipe, and when he reaches the top, he sits down (like when you press down to slide on a hill).

No idea what happened to that, but I'll screw around with it some more (and maybe somebody here has a better idea of what happened).

Thanks again for the good word, folks!

EDIT: As far as I can tell, I've fixed the problem in the castle. But we'll see... oh, how we'll see indeed...

It was a nice hack. For me, it was kind of easy, but I'm sure that means for others it had its challenges. Dude, I got like, a gazillion lives in level 4! You could continuously jump on cheep cheeps for the entire level, almost!

I really enjoyed this hack even if it has one world, I looked at this hack like if it was a short story. I liked how you designed the levels, kept me on my toes. Nice job overall.
