I got this from a member on my board and I decided to post it here to find out what you think about this. If this is posted somewhere else then just close this...

The story is located here. Basically they plane on giving us new ID's and digitalized and "spiffy".

What do you think will come of this? Good or bad?

Someone WILL get fucked the fuck up for tacking this onto a military appropriations bill. Fuck this shit, it's something you pull when you know it can't stand on its own merits.

As for the bill itself, it actually undoes some state regulations which are more stringent. Nice move, dickheads. Wasn't this the party of states rights?

EDIT: Oh yes, it's also another fucking unfunded mandate. ENOUGH OF THIS.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I am really pissed over this issue too. Fortuanately, it looks as though there will be a battle in the courts regarding the constitutionality of the bill, so there is some hope yet. I just hope it doesnt get "fully" passed.

Is this the same as our government proposing madatory identity cards for everyone, with biometric data stored on them?

It's not a very popular idea over here, there are not many people who buy terrorism as a justification, and people think it's a step too far. The government argue "why worry unless you have something to hide?", the public argue that it's an intrusion too far by the government into their lives. I'm inclined to agree.

When George Orwell wrote his famous novel, he got the title a bit off. A more appropriate title would have been "2005."

Guess I also forgot to mention that the bill was passed 100 to none.:/

But as the quote below says we still have a chance because it has to go through the courts...

The way they went about doing it. I wouldn't mind if someone found a way to restrict amendments such as these so that they must be somewhat related to the main bill.

Its not really needed and people can still hijack things. It isn't hard if you do everything right, this is just making it easier for them to track certain people who can get rid of the damn thing and run.

Being Canadian, this story doesn't really affect me..

I wouldn't mind having to carry around an ID card; It would up the security in some places, which is good.

The problem with the ID is more of the RFID that is going to accompany the ID--which means your movements can be tracked or you can be singled out as a US Citizen in other countries if you appear to blend in the public.

Yeah, that sounds about right. This is one more step towards total censorship.

Despite the capacity for Orwellian abuse, this will help improve security measures. Also, since I will be over 21 and have no more use for my fake ID, I don't mind as much.

i guess in the greater good, it's is alright for the system although there has to be some holes in the system... anyways, i just hope the people who aren't authorized to use the new technology that comes with the ID don't use it for their own mischeivous deeds...

eventualy they wont let you buy or sell anything without a specal "ID"
they'll get rid of cash alltogeather and the whole world will be on the same monitary system, and they will be able to track everyone on the planet from one computer... this is just the first step

If it can tell the government where I am at any point in time, it's bad. I really don't like the idea of all your money and information being controlled by the government. With cash, you have it, end of story. With computers, your money is a number on a hard drive. This presents a bit of a problem in that the computer may crash or get hacked, but that's not a huge issue as backups are frequent and security is fuckin' tight. The real issue is control. Suppose you piss off someone who runs the system? Clickitty click, typitty type, you owe $32767.69 in parking fees and haven't paid your taxes in 6 years.
