Ok, so here's what replaced the food pyramid... Now, will it actually make THAT much of a difference? I mean, I'm pretty sure the 1992 food pyramid kept people's attention for what, like, 2 years, maybe? A new plan will only work if people are willing to follow it. And its name? Well, in case you are completely blind and can't see it above, it's MyPyramid (Actually, I just put that there for the press release link) The USDA came up with a pretty funny name, actually. It goes along with the whole interactive theme. It also makes it sound like some geek living in his basement came up with it and then released it onto the internet. Just like MySpace, MyDate, MyMail, MyGames, MyYahoo!, MyHealth , MyAnythingPersonalized. Anyway, yea, I'm sure the increasing obesity in America will cease to exist because of this, right? It might go down for a year or two, but I'm sure people will begin to follow the plans at the same rate that they did for the old pyramid shortly after that and obesity will continue to rise again. But at least the USDA got some press coverage. Unless beef is killing people or this happens, there apparently is no reason for journalists to pay attention to them. Ok, but being less cynical, I like this new pyramid (take a look at it, you will too) better than the old one, but I just don't think that it will really help our obesity problem at all. And oh my, I forgot to put any of the parts that actually make up the pyramid. Oh well, I'll leave that to the people that post in the Health/Fitness thread. Because I'm sure they'd be able to pay attention to it and analyze it a lot more than me. And I'm saying all this as I eat a chocolate bar. Good thing I'm in track, otherwise I'd be... well, I don't wanna think about it. |

the food pyramid is effective towards school kids who i think are in third grade and such. it's pretty much ineffective towards people who have control over what they eat. in addition, this is just a guideline, not hard fact. as a result, people can follow this if they want to live a healthy life as the government believes (or I should say, the panel of experts who revised it). anyways, this is the standard of which you can determine how healthy you eat. if you didn't have this, how could you determine what you ate was healthy in the long run? |

Funny, I took it to mean that parents who control what food their children recieved would force them to the pyramid thing.

Really, in a way, it's the parent's fault. I rarely got my lunch bought from school, and when I did, it was a special occasion. 2 sandwhiches for lunch, an apple or orange for reccess. Maybe a couple of buiskits, and for dinner, a piece of meat and a couple of different types of veggies. Parents who're lazy just give their kids lunch money and is blown at Mc Donalds or someplace like that. I used to have Mc Donalds or KFC or something maybe twice a month. I was rarely into excersize, and spent all of my time on video games. I'm not fat at all, so I dunno. Maybe it's just a motabalism thing. |

Well yeah. If your metabolism is fast you can eat all the sweets you want and you won't get fat (though you might get diabetes). That doesn't mean eating right is a bad idea, though.

I don't think it will make a difference. Some people thought the old pyramid was a fake or it did not work.

I can't see why a new pyramid's needed - as long as you feed your kids/teens healthy foods and make calorie/fat-rich meals once in a blue moon, then you're already doing your part. God forbid you need a GUIDE. Oh, and the whole "eat X servings of fruits/vegetables a day" thing is asinine. Nobody has time to eat all those servings to begin with. |
