Well... I decided to make a hack of FF1!... and well, I want comments and suggestions!

As such, I'll tell you what I want to do...

=What I want to do
-Completely changed story... almost
-Add more characters during main events
-Make an unique boss battle theme for each type of boss
-Have new events (mainly, a set of rivals for the heroes)
-Change all the maps
-Change the GFX of all monsters and even create new monsters
-More areas, anyone?
-5-letter name hack
-several items can be bought at shops
-All stats for the classes changed
-Each of the four characters have their own set of GFX (in short, the hero will have a different Black Mage class sprite than the fourth character)
-Intro + Ending changed
-Extra endings (basically, losing at the last boss gets you an alternate ending and if some conditions are met or are not met, the game may end before you make it to the final boss)
-Bosses can have multiple forms (in the sense that when their HP get low, they become a different monster but keep their HP level)

Since I know next to nothing about Hex editing, a lot of the details above won't appear.

=What I will do
-Completely changed story
-Stats for all classes & heroes changed
-New GFX for all enemies & all stats changed
-All maps edited (will do towns last however)

Anyway... on to the details.

The backstory is basically the same... but what happen between the opening and ending is different. The main villain is different and will show itself many times during the main quest (altought you only really fight him/her/it twice in the game). Also, there will be more than just one character that will lie to the heroes in the hack... Also, it will seems at first that the world is threatened by four fiends but appearances are what they are: appearances...

Anyway, I won't give much details on the story for now. All that I'll say is that I have everything already planned out but since I'm just beginning to actually hack the game and can change details easily, I'm open to suggestions.

Now, time for some screenshots!... or so I would say if I had actual screenshots. Hack not nearly completed enough for screenshots unfortunately... but I have some pictures of some of the monsters I edited.

The replacement for the Imp, the Mask Dude! It's a slight edit of one of my old Imp replacements I had done in a past hack that was never released.

The MadFace in that hack was considered really funny and well-done... but I tought it would be illogical that the first enemy would be a floating face. As such, I edited the sprite turning it into a shockingly small guy wearing a huge mask. If people judge that the Mask Dude sprite is just too ugly, I might return it to it's original design.

The first boss, Legion. Took me a while to complete him. I think that he's somewhat well-done.

No, that's not a mistake. I plan to keep the Marsh Cave in the hacked game (altought the layout will be far different) and this guy appears to be the dungeon's boss! Unlike the original game, you only fight one of them... and that's a good thing since I'm giving it something no monster in the original game had: a good AI. This guy will actually use support spells to incapacipate the party and protect itself before moving on for the kill. In short, you'll actually have to use better strategies in the hack than just "TEMP on Fighter/Knight, 0wn3d enemies".

Judging from this guy's size, it's obvious that he's the last boss. While I think that I did a good job... I'm not satisfied with some details. Some of it's tentacles look weird and so do the eye. I'll probably change him anyway.

...

Well... comments? Suggestions?

Might I just say the graphics look a little off? There's not really much sense of proportion and they have a really amateurish quality to them (the perfectly diagonal tentacles, f'rinstance). But I know spriting isn't the easiest thing in the world, nor are good graphics really necessary for a good hack.

Okay...once again, I'm asking who here has the Final Facelift bytes? And...when I was working on FFDX, there were a number of FF1 hacks going on...we had compiled a pretty through list of offsets, and a few tables...I don't have those anymore...does anybody?

If we can re-locate these bits of data, I'm sure ALL of those points mentioned can be done.

And...multiple items in the shop...Disch made one of those. The patch is around here, somewhere. Apply it, place the BOTTLE elsewhere, and be sure to list Disch in your thanks.

If you're having difficulty with the hex, I can help.

It's in there... check in the FF1 patches.

And since the thread's kind of... well, dead, I WILL post the Bonus Bytes doc, complete with Final Facelift breakdown, in the FF hacking thread. Enjoy.

Read the thread... too bad I'm really hopeless when it comes to hex-editing...

Maybe I'll try it sometime before an actual demo release...

Dude, we all started pretty bad at it. The way I got how to do it was, well, fiddling around with a hex editor, just to see what happens. Just make sure to keep a backup copy of the ROM.

Seriously, if you'd like help, I can give it.

I would actually like to have some help... but first, I want the hack to be somewhat playable. In short, first, I'll complete the prologue part of the hack (before the Bridge event) and then I'll let you edit the intro, bridge, and credits (if that was what you meant by help... but if you just meant about giving suggestions and comments as well as beta-testing... it's still appreciated).

Whatever you do will NOT be as bad as the first time I tried hacking FF, so don't feel bad about whatever comes out. Just make sure that you get the facelift things asap and make good graphics, and a lot of people will probably play it because of eye candy alone.

I'm basically ready to release the first demo... well, almost.

The demo is completed up to the first boss. Once you pass the bridge, the demo is over.

Until I'm finished with the last details (and found a host), I'll post a link to the IPS patch.

For now...

Features:
-Altered stats (all monsters and classes)
-GFX changes (all monsters, some overworld sprites)
-Changed text (most of it is done)

What shall not be done in this demo:
-Maps shall not be changed
-various enhancement hacks by Disch not included

What is left to change:
-the amount of EXP and gold individual enemies give
-I think I forgot a few dialogues... maybe.

Now... screenshots time!

The heroes fighting a group of Imp replacements (which I named MaskDorks)! As espected, the first enemies are not hard to beat but...

...almost every enemy has an AI now! In short, almost every enemy has some kind of special attack or technique... and spell-casting is not limited to bosses only!

The replacement for the Wolf! The enemies that have no AIs usually have boosted stats in order to make up for their lack of intelligence. Nothing is easy anymore!

The replacement for the zombies. Virtually weak in everything and has no special attacks... but as stated earlier, all enemies are dangerous now: in this case, the enemies doesn't strike too hard and miss often... but they WILL paralyze you unless you kill them fast enough!

Some of the enemies in the hack will be strong... VERY strong. Fighting enemies such as Clusters and Slimes without first levelling-up is not a good idea. Here, a Cluster shows it's power by striking 5 times the White Mage for a whopping 34 points of damage.

Same battle, a bit later. This foolish low-level party just won't run from a fight. While the warrior's armor effectively reduce damage since the Clusters' attack power rely mostly on the amount of times they strike... the warrior's high defense won't protect him from the Clusters' special attack. In this case, it would be best to run.

The Slimes are the second-to-strongest normal enemies in the hack (well... in the prologue anyway). This is a rare sight: a Slime's strike actually connecting. The Slimes have low agility and accuracy but stupidly overpowered individual attacks. While Slimes can't touch high-level parties, this low-level party is getting slaughtered! Each type of character has it's own strenghts and weaknesses... and those differences are actually important in the hack! Thieves never have to worry about most undead and slime-type enemies becease of their high agility but magical enemies tend to devastate them. Mages suffer massive damage from enemies such as Clusters and Knife Beasts but last actually longer than the mighty Warriors against enemies that rely on their spells and special attacks.

The screenshot you were probably waiting for! The boss fight of the demo! All of the bosses have a specific strategy that they use against your party. In Legion's case, he'll put the party to sleep and then hammer the party with Lit and Beam. After a short round of hammering the party, he'll heal and put the party back to sleep. How you can counter his strategy is up to you.

That's what makes it hilarious.

Maybe you should re-do all the graphics in your unique style. That would probably keep us entertained for a while.

Bad news: The graphics are unafraid to suck with GUSTO.

Good news: I like the idea with the enemy AI. Just dial it back a bit... you've GOT to have some easy-ish fights early on to build up.

zerodius. there's one problem with your hack. There's not enough "the author is going to commit suicide because he obviously can't hack, or make graphics, and is probably just fucking around with hackster and having his 3 year old nephew draw some graphics for him" in the hack.

One thing that sucks about the game is the monster sprites. The monster sprites look horrible. You could not figure out any good monster sprites. Thats the only problem about the game.

Amateur graphics aside (since everybody else has already ripped on them well enough), if I'm going to get totally creamed within the first few battles because I can't level up, because I keep running away, because the enemies are (as you yourself put it) stupidly overpowered, the hack's going straight into the trash. You NEED to have a nice helping of stupidly underpowered enemies within a "safe zone" (like around the first town) in order to allow the player to level up a few times, even if they give you hardly any experience at all. It's a well-established RPG tradition.

Also, be sure to bring some pictures of the text (if that's the only other thing you changed) when you post the demo. You should also consider changing the old and tired maps to some extent. I can assure you that VERY few people are going to try this just for the monsters alone.
