I have been annoyed with a certain thing for a while now, and I need a fix/some help. I am fairly sure that this would be a simple block to create, but I dont know any ASM, so I can't be sure.

Anyway, what I need is: A block that acts like a vine tile ALL the time. BUT, when mario or another sprite is "sensed" ontop of it, it becomes a solid tile so Mario/sprites can't fall thru. However, mario will still be able to crawl down the "tile" by standing ontop of it, and pressing down.

So its a normal vine tile that acts as a solid block when stood on. But acts like a vine tile again when stood on and pressing down.

I hope that makes sense. Now I doubt that antone will make me this, but hey its worth a shot isn't it.

Hmm...I doubt that this would be consitered simple

But, wouldn't it cause Mario to die if he stood on the block and the one above him was a block?

Well, this is possible with block tool using the "Next Block In Map16" block, but it will only work once (climbing to standing on. No going back down).

And what do you mean by your second sentence? It would just be empty space above mario....so:

The M is mario, the "\" is dirt or what ever, and the "|-|" is the ladder or vine.

So mario climbs up that ladder starting at the bottom. He reaches where he is in the diagram, and can stand there. I guess the block would need to be activated as the solid block when marios bottom pixels touch the blocks top pixels (is that what you were talking about?). Then when marios bottom pixels and the blocks top pixels touch AND the game notices you pressed down, the blocks acts like a ladder again. That make sense?

I actually think Nintendo did this in SMB2, but I may be wrong there.

OH I see what you mean now...

I thought you ment a vine that when a passing enemy hit it would make all the tiles turn into bricks...

You could just make the top tile of the ladder a ledge tile...

But then you couldn't crawl through, and climbing up wouldn't really work too well of at all (though you could jump at the end.)

But then you wouldn't be able to climb back down... I personally think a tile like this would rock, if it worked like the ones in Donkey Kong. It would let you climb up into things... and... stuff...

You know what I mean. But I think it would be harder than you guys think... the whole down-pressing thing would probably involve controller reading ASM which might or might not even be supported by blocktool... I don't know how the thing works.

I don't see a problem with this.
There's basically three tests it should do:
- Is Mario atop it and standing? -> Solid, or, prevent falling.
- Is Mario climbing? Act like vine.
- Is Mario atop it and ducking? -> Change Mario's state to climbing, add 1 to the Y position.

This block would be nice, and shouldn't be too hard, right?
