I think the options cover most of what needs to be said.
Current oil production rates and oil prices indicate that peak oil has already been reached and we are now in the period of decline. Estimates say that the oil levels could cause a major energy crisis as early as 2020 and very probably by 2040. There are currently no economically viable alternatives to fossil fuels given our current energy usage rates.

The question.... how do you think it will turn out?

Bad, very bad.

This is a powder keg and match situation. Nations will fight like bizzitches. And it will be bad. Very bad.

Nations will fight? As in future tense? I may be seeing the current global situation as being more dire then it is, but IMO the resource wars have already begun.

How about, "Nations are fighting like bizzitches."

Somehow I think this is all going to end up in a very drastic reshaping of civilization and human thinking.

No, I'm talking about actual direct conflict. Not indirect economic warfare like in Iraq. I mean Russia stamping into it's old central asian states to suck up oil and competing with China and India for these states.
I'm talking about America just implacing new governments in it's old oil stores like Venezuala and certain middle eastern nations.

I'm talking total blitzkrieg.

Oil prices will rise, substitutes will be developed and new sources opened up. The chances of a crash are highly unlikely and the fact that such an event would have been unprecendented in the history of capitalism should be telling. If an oil crash were in the future, prices should be reflecting it now, since people would be hoarding oil.

There is still amazing amounts of oil left in the earth, we just use amazing amounts of it per day. -.-;

Personally, I think we won't run out of oil. But run out of the oil that is cheap, there is alot of oil that is quite more expensive and harder to get and clean but is possible to use. Still I don't deny that they will be a point in the future where the nations are forced to do a change. There is already some progress with alternatives, such as hydrogen. But thoose alternatives aren't shown too much of.

I think the crash affects you depending on where you live in the world too. Some countries depend on more on the oil than others. If a oil crash happened right now it would major crises but I think that it would affect the community moderatly if it happened after 15 years... unless the diffrent nation's goverments dosen't realise about this. -.-;

I think Kitten Yiffer is right. We just have to drill deeper to find more resources.

There will be a crisis but it won

The oil we use is the deepest sort. It is the most easily accessible. In order to continue to use petrols, we will have to use rock grinding measures (the rocks that have soaked up amounts of oil). Oil sands. Sorts of things like that.

But when we crash, we're going to crash hard, because implementation of the new fuel sources will be...Not widespread enough.

Uh, we have a strategic reserve, yes. It was established in the wake of the oil shock in the 70s and is meant to protect against those kinds of events... not a long-term oil crash or whatever.

As is often the case, the 3rd world would be hit hardest.

So just because oil prices are high-which they always are- you think that we're reaching a crisis?

Oil prices have quadrupled in the past few years. Production is being lowered. Strategic reserves are looking mighty appealing to governments right now. We aren't at the energy crisis yet, not in the first world, but we're approaching it...FAST.

Oil companies can increase the price to whatever they want. People will pay for it no matter how high because they need it that bad. It's possible that oil companies are doing that, what with great scaepgoats such as the war in Iraq, and an Energy Crisis.

I don't normally drop the s-bomb. But you are really, really stupid. This is more than just corporate price gouging. That has already been dealt with. The world oil stores have reached peak oil production. Meaning that they have passed the point where they can be as productive as they used to be. And we've tapped more or less, every single known large oil store on the planet (plus one more with ANWAR). The oil prices went up prior to the war in Iraq, and are fluctuating due to OPEC nations having to admit that their production limits have been met and that they will soon have to continue to slow production of oil further. The more they cut down on barrels a day, the higher the price goes. Supply and demand. Our supply is shrinking, and the demand is growing. With nations like China and India in hyper-growth spurts right now... The energy crisis is being ushered in.

Nah. This isn't the best issue for me, but isn't Canada's oil sand supply potentially larger than Saudi Arabia's? Russia supposedly has a fuckload of oil too. And IIRC, the continental shelf has more oil than every known land reserve. Something like that.

Yeah. People are theorizing that Canada could potentially be the new "super-oil-rich" nation. But I don't really buy it. The land oil that we have is in small reserve pockets. The "oil" out on the continental shelf is actually natural gas reserves. And the oilsands are the largest in the world. But it is expensive to refine.

I should point out that the "normal" oil we are so dependant on right now has an energy content to energy required to get it ratio of 40 to 1. The alternative-oil sources such as Canadian oil sands have a 1.5 to 1 ratio.

Think you can afford gassing up your cars at $80 a gallon?

You think the shipping industry can afford to get your nice consumer products to you with those prices?

You think your electricity is still going to flow? Even when you can't pay the bill when demand remains constant yet 90% of electrical production is still based on fossil fuels?

Think again....
