Schwa here. Last year I started working on a SMW hack, which I posted a few screenshots for, which were liked by a lot of people. I had nearly the 3rd World done and I discontinued the hack. 6 months after that, I was projectless (a rare feat), and I happened to open up my unfinished hack and play what I had done. I said to myself, "Wow, if only I'd finish this..." Reluctantly, I finished the last unfinished level I had started, looked at it, and said, "That does it. I WILL finish this hack."

So, ever since then, I have been one busy dog working on this hack, and let me tell you, it is EXCELLENT. I have almost the 4th World finished, and the overworld only for my 5th World. I'll show you some screenshots of my progress, but be warned that although there is a lack of ASM (so far) in this hack, it pretty much breaks the rules of common SMW hacking.

So, here we go!

Some of you may recognize this World 1 Overworld from 6 months ago. It's a little different, eh? Yeah, I had a problem with the screen exit that led to the main overworld, so I put in a pipe. Also, that pipe ain't the only place the 1st Tower goes to...

This is the new W1-3, Roughed Route. It used to be called Gold Dino Mine, with a yellow Yoshi at the beginning, but you guys suggested not to put in too many special Yoshis in the beginning levels. I agree. This level is unique because it has 2 routes to the exit; a fire route and an ice route. Nice stuff, really.

This is a portion of World 2, the Hills of Grove. I couldn't fit it all in, but basically by the 2nd Level you have to decide which way to go. You can head left, to W2-3 Skybound Stair, or right toward W2-4 Sunken Mesa. (It's called that because it comes out of the ocean on the overworld map.)

World 2-1, Rainwater Hill. This isn't one of my best levels, but remember that I wasn't as skilled as I am now when I made this. I still like how it's divided into 2 sections, one at the foothills and one on the peaks...

W2-5, Celestial Wood. A very nice level because it contains a puzzle, which you have to do fast to beat the level in time. I like the coloring even better than the actual level, though.

This is the Koopa Grove Tower, or Tower 2. It's a forest fortress of sorts, and Lakitu bombards you the entire way. There is, however, one part where you go through a scrolling-screen part with those logs crashing down on you, which I must say I designed quite nicely. (Still, the level in general needs to be longer. Meh.)

This is World 3, Crater Canyon. With a tiny palette adjustment, the landscape went from a watery cavern to a hot volcano! The thing I like about this is how the scenery changes when you beat levels. I got pretty creative.

World 3-2, Red Ore Road. This level is deviously difficult, especially near the end. My hack is set on a high difficulty to begin with, but you can tell this level is tougher still than the others.

World 3-4, Jade Scantum. You guessed it, hello water level! The level itself is short and fairly easy compared to the others, but if you want a challenge, go for the secret exit! With it you can skip two of the harder levels.

World 3-5, Diamond Dash. Hah HAH, I dare you guys to come up with a better cave palette than this! I absolutely LOVE the color scheme. But this long, autoscrolling, lava-ridden obsticle coruse is only beautiful on the outside. You'll learn to hate it after enough tries. (There is a hard-to-get secret in this level that allows you to jump to World 4-3.)

World 4-2, Whistle Canyon. I gave the player 500 seconds to beat this level. Dexterity is everything as you'll be doing a lot of "rock-climbing" as you try and unlock the vines. Tricky stuff.

This is a portion of World 5, the Jigsaw Islands. I have absolutely NO levels finished for World 5, but I'm 1 level away from finishing World 4, then I can get started. (I heard it's smarter to bring the Overworld and Levels up in sync, but I just had to get this Jigsaw idea in the game as soon as possible. I was in school and BAM, the idea came to me and I jumped for joy.)

Last words: As I said before, the tower in World 1 doesn't JUST go to the pipe. You come back after beating World 2 Tower and a Star Road warp is there! Go inside and you'll be in Yoshi Sanctuary (what I turned Special World into). Every time you beat a new Tower from then on, a new level appears in the Sanctuary. Beating the levels give you special prizes (like Blue Yoshi, Yellow Yoshi, 1UPs or your choice of power-up), but no paths open. However, once all 7 Towers have been beaten (I'll have to move Tower 7 out of Bowser World for it to work), the levels form a chain that lead to Bowser World.

Also, hidden all over the Overworld are Yoshi Palaces. 3 are accessable from regular levels and are on the main map, and 4 appear on submaps after beating Rexxon Forts which are located in various Worlds. Every time a Yoshi Palace is beaten, the level is transported to Yoshi Sanctuary. By beating all 7, you'll form a chain that leads to a SHORTCUT to Bowser's Castle, with only 1 level standing in your way. Furthermore, when you beat that single level, another level appears back in Yoshi Sanctuary called 'FINALE'. This will be THE hardest level in the game, and upon completion, you get a bunch of 1UPs and the colors for the overworld and shells change as well as the gfx for enemies (just like beating Special World in the origional).

What do you guys think of my screenshots and my crazy ideas? The more feedback, the better.

P.S. Thank you guys for finding offset data for the boss hits and what they throw. I'll most likely be making the bosses harder by upping the amount of hits they take and what Iggy and Larry throw at you. The SMW hacking community is AWESOME!

Love the screenshots, a few are plain , but in my opinion a level doesnt have to be crowded to be interesting, also ablout the idea of finishing the castles for the special world to get to bowsers castle, i thought of a similar idea, that when a castle is beaten you got a level appear on the world map , once they are all open you have to clear them in succesion to get to the last world etc, i gave up because it would probably use more than 96 exits so if you figure that out , it may just inspire me to get working again

Hey, that looks pretty damned good!

Keep it up. I can't wait to try it, either. When will you release a demo?

It's nice to see we still have some hackers using just the original graphics. There's an undeniable charm associated with the original stuff that a lot of new graphics can't compare to.

Yeah, the hack looks awesome, even if there are no new graphics. I especially like the screens of the overworld, probably the best and most unique overworld I've ever seen.

Go on, finish the hack. I'll definetily play this one.

This just proves ExGfx isn't needed for a hack to look nice.

about the world 2 shot, there is one section at the bottom of the right-most cliff that looks like you missed a small detail. is there a reason for that?

To K. Pearman: Ah, just out of curiosity, people... Does anything... BAD, happen when you use more than 96 exits?

To Darkflight #1: NO demos will be released. I'll release it once everything is finished. Yes, a bit harsh I know, but at least I promise to work hard on the hack so it's finished sooner. I don't like releasing demos, though, because I feel it takes away from the finished product.

To JJoker, DufarC and Darkflight #2: Yeah, no ExGfx in this hack, most likely. It IS my first SMW hack ever, after all... It's a shame there isn't more music I can use than just the ones they have... I mean, if there was a tool to import MIDIs into Roms, I would go to town, baby! But no use whining about something that doesn't exist, I say...

Also, about the cliff, yes it does look weird. It's supposed to be a ramp from the isle to the cliff, but I just don't like how it looks. There's nothing I can really do about it, though, because I did the best thing I could to get from this isle to the cliff top... Ah well.

More info on the hack: The 4 Switch Palaces are replaced by Elemental Sanctuaries. The Yellow Palace is Earth Sanctuary, the Green Palace is Air Sanctuary, the Red Palace is Fire Sanctuary, and the Blue Palace is Water Sanctuary. Each Sanctuary is a long, difficult level with the switch lying at the end.

Also, ever wonder what happened to Star World? I turned it into World 4, Air Mountain. I'll show you a screenshot sometime. Colors are different and everything.

Would the elements each Sanctuary is named after be importaint or are they just named that way, because Yellow allways struck me as lightning(pun not intended) if anything, with green being the green grasses of the earth, though it fits air decently too. I understand if the switches, for example, activated level exits related to what element they are, because you can't really do a thunder effect for a level exit can you... well, it may be possible with imagination but that isn't the point of this thread. I have to say that I might keep an eye out for this release, Jade Scantum has to be one of the best just palette edits I've seen. Oh, and I could try and tutor you on how to use ExGfx but you don't seem to need them for this hack

Actually, I know how to use ExGfx. I got some to work once, but didn't like it and threw it out. Actually, each World has a theme, and the Rexxon Forts, Boo Houses, Sanctuaries and Koopa Towers in each World all reflect the element type.

World 1 = Earth. Yellow Switch Palace is located here, so it's called Earth Sanctuary.
World 2 = Grove, as in plants. That's why W2 Tower is a forest fortress.
World 3 = Fire, hence the overworld.
World 4 = Air, hence the name Air Mountain.
World 5 = well... Brain. I wanted Psychic, but 5 letters is all I can fit, so I went with the next best thing. It fits somewhat because the Jigsaw Islands have a lot of puzzles to solve.
World 6 = Water. This world, though not started yet, will be called the Syrup Marsh.
World 7 = Thunder. This is Bowser's Land.

I disagree. I think the old graphics are boring.

Your post contributed nothing. No one cares if you disagree with him. I am not saying you shouldnt have even posted, but at least say why you think its boring or what you thought of his hack.

BTW, the OV looks sorta like the OV from the beta SMW.

They're boring because they're used so often. I've seen that cave background hundreds of times before by now and it isn't getting any prettier. You can't tell much from a screenshot, but there doesn't seem to be anything particularily interesting about this hack.

well this is why i tried to start the no exgraphics contest, there are people out there who believe level design is a great deal better than good gfx, and the 96 level thing, i was told you have to use asm to increase the max level counter, correct me if im wrong though

Now wait a second, Kario, he has the right to tell me his opinion. Just so long as he unserstands mine. And it doesn't hurt my feelings at all that he doesn't like the overworld. No matter where you go in life, there will always be critics. And I respect each and every one of them. That's a tip kids, write it down.

Besides, he still hasn't seen the overworlds with Special World colors... (When you pass FINALE, it activates Special World colors, but the colors will be VASTLY different than the origional Special World colors. That's another tip kids, write it down. )

And a little note to my new critic... Screenshots will NEVER be as good as the actual gameplay. Taking screenshots is very hard to do, moreso in fact than actually making the hack, because you have to go through your hack and select the absolute BEST moments and areas to show to your ever so impatient fans. It's just like writing a cover letter for a job. You want to show them you're serious about the job, and in hacking you have to show that you're serious about making a hack. Personally I have a very hard time taking screenshots. That's why I had more writing than pictures, it's because I thought I could say more about the hack in words because pictures are actually my weakness. (Another tip kids! )

So, now that I've defended myself...

K. Pearman, do you know the offset address for changing the level counter, or do you know of anyone who has that knowledge? I doubt I'll need 96 levels, but still, just in case...

Your hack looks really nice. I'll definitely play a level-only hack, just as much as I'd play a graphic hack. Your overworld also looks exceptional, and I like the BG palettes in the two cave levels. Keep at it.

Hey, I remember this hack six months ago. That first overworld is still familiar.

But YES! A hack with good world/level designs and no EXGFX! That is exaclty what I am trying to achieve with my hack. Except it is more story-based.

I love the elemental levels and worlds! It is awesome! I shall be waiting patiently for this hack while I work on my own. Keep it up, Schwa!

Wow, wow, and wow. And did I say wow?

The game looks awesome. I REALLY like the OW. It's quite creative My only squibble is that the underground level in world 1 is revealed. It should stay hidden. But hey, it's not my hack. :p

I am looking forward to this hack.

Darkflight: Thank you. I'll check it out tomorrow. (It's really late... meh...)

Golden Yoshi: Thanks for the compliments, as usual... Yes, I daresay that my Diamond Dash palette is unmatched by the SMW hacking community. And if you guys say that is heresy, show me a better one for the same bg and I'll be convinced!

Xenon Odyssey: FINALLY someone who remembers my hack from 6 months ago! The plain truth is, I'm glad I resumed my project. I believe in finishing what I start, so I thought it wasn't right to leave such an excellent project unfinished, never to be released...

Sketchie: Well, it's good to give your opinion to someone seeking it. I may change the caves, but I kind of like them out like that when there's no path leading to it. It's like, just because you haven't seen a cave with your own two eyes doesn't mean it don't exist, eh?

But actually I DID, in fact, change the large pool to a small pool on World One map as I was advised 6 months ago. The screenie just doesn't show it.
