Rewind, one year, to the quarter finals...

Chelsea's done well to get this far... but they're 0-3 against Arsenal this year and I can't see that changing. :\ Talk about a free pass to the finals.

I figured Chelsea would take Arsenal last year. I had them in the final, I think... then again, nobody saw Porto and Monaco coming.

Would be funny to see Mourinho win the CL two straight years with two different teams. I don't think that's ever been done before... definitely not in CL days.

This only vaguely has to do with soccer, but what club or team has "ntl:" on the front of their kits?

I went to a concert last night, Flogging Molly, and they're a big band that most members are Irish. Somebody threw that jersey onstage, and the lead singer put it on. (He also got us chanting oleeeeeeee ole ole oleeeeeeeeeeeee olee, which we did again to get them to play an encore).

Irish football really isn't the biggest thing, so I wouldn't really know. None of the Premier League clubs, though, I think.

The penalty for Inter became 6 European matches without audiences. That's gotta sting economically.

Actually, it's 4 games and then a further 2 (on top of any other punishment) if the fans misbehave within a 3 year period.

...So yeah, it's 6.

Rangers HAD ntl on their kit at one time... was the shirt blue?

Yeah they're blue, but now they're sponsored by Carling.

Shit, I looked it up some more, and I see what you're referring to.

But the one had Umbro instead of Nike, and horizontal white and green stripes.

EDIT

Found it. It's Celtic's home kit. I should have guessed

Damn, now they're sponsored by Carling too. Bastards are taking over everything

Celtic.

Actually, both Celtic and Rangers have Carling as their sponsor now. No idea why they share sponsors... must be something in the rulebook I missed.

I'll drink to that. Then again, my OLD Celtic shirt has WH Smith or whatever that company's called as the sponsor.

...When I get some cash, I really should consider picking up a new kit downtown. I can find ANYTHING downtown, from Man U to Celtic to Panathinaikos to... probably Rosenborg. Or Brondby, I saw someone wearing their kit last year.

I dunno what it means in the grand scheme of things, but Chelsea and Liverpool played to a draw toady. The announcers were saying that Liverpool has an edge in the next game, but if they draw the next one too, than Chelsea will advance.

This UEFA thing is going on in the middle of their seasons though, right?

And I have a general thing, who is the best player in and league or any nation?

Liverpool has the edge since they managed to get a draw away, and they played a fairly good match. The home match should be easier for them. Only problem Liverpool has is that if Chelsea scores, they will have to score twice, since they couldn't get any away goals.

The UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Cup both follow the same season as most European leagues, which means that the season starts around August, and ends around May. There are some exceptions, mostly in countries in the north, where the season starts in April and ends in October. That way the teams that qualify for the Champions League/UEFA Cup are based on the way the leagues ended only a couple of months earlier (the exceptions being, again, those with a different kind of season, where the teams sent to the European cups are based on the way the league ended in October the year before, and the positions in the current season (which is then more than half-complete), is not considered).

An interesting thing this year is Liverpool, which may give the English Football Association some trouble if they win the Champions League. England are given 4 spots in the Champions League, which would usually go to the teams that place 1st to 4th in the English Premier League. If Liverpool wins, however, it's up to the English FA to decide if they'll give the 4th spot to the team that places 4th in the league (most likely Everton) or to the Champions League champions (since Liverpool most likely will not manage to place among the top 4 in the EPL).

As for best player. Hm, well, hard to say, there are tons of good alternatives, and I don't think I have a current preference.

Oh, so if I interpreted this right, the teams that did good in the Premier league in 04 are the selectees (IE Liverpool and Chelsea) for the UEFA?

And what about like a top 5 or so? So I can beat my friend down in FIFA 05.
I try with many clubs, but he owned me with Real Madrid. He started Owen, and just plain Owned. I countered with Bayer Munich and school'd him though (KAAAAAAAHN)

Yeah, the top 4 from the Premier League 2003/2004 were in this season's (2004/2005) Champions League. Those teams were Arsenal, Chelsea, Man Utd, and Liverpool (Arsenal and Man Utd were knocked out in the Round of 16, by Bayern M

Yeah I forgot to mention that.

Football needs to have its own thread. Discuss all things football (not that stupid American sport).

And hmm, I actually recognize most of the names on that list. Hurray!

Also, this womps. I have no idea who to root for. It's not like I have a home team (MLS sucks). I wish I got more of these games on TV.

*looks at the PFA's list*

I'd agree with MOST of the names there but I'd swap Johnson with Rooney, who is just as good as Johnson if not better given his age. (His goal this weekend, with a DEAD LEG no less... outstanding.) I'd put Johnson on a second XI though.

Meanwhile, in other board member-related news...

- Celtic looks to have won the SPL. Still 4 games left but the 2-1 win over Rangers on the weekend SHOULD ice it nicely. Celtic have a 5 point lead and could even manage one slip-up on their way to hopefully retaining the title. And that's WITHOUT Larsson (and with the always fun to hear about Craig Bellamy who I wouldn't mind seeing in green and white again last year after his recent form) to boot.
- Tromso (SomerZ's team! ) are starting off OK in Norway. One win and two draws... nothing spectacular but 5 points after the first 3 games is a good way to start the season. So, how's Bernier look so far and will you give him to us for the Gold Cup in July?
- Montreal kicks off their USL First Division (formerly the A-League) title defense this weekend in Puerto Rico. We hope for more 9,000+ crowds that overflow the stands, of course.

Okay, what's with the divisions renaming themselves? At least First Division makes more sense than A-League (a-HEM, Championship/League 1/Conference...).

And how does Chelsea advance in the event of another draw? Goal differential in the past rounds?

I'm not sure on the specifics, but the second and third levels got renamed in America for no real reason. So it now goes:

First Level: Major League Soccer
Second Level: USL First Division (formerly A-League)
Third Level: USL Second Division (formerly Pro Soccer League)
Fourth Level: Premier Development League

Of course, there is no promotion/relegation.

And all the Canadian teams in the USL *STILL* get the shaft when it comes time for the US Open Cup, since *WE* can't participate! BS.

drjayphd: Well, that depends on the type of draw. If the game finishes 0-0, then they will proceed to 30 minutes of extra time; if that solves nothing, then we have a penalty shootout. If it's any other draw (1-1, 2-2, 4-4, etc.) then Chelsea will advance because they scored more goals away from home than Liverpool did. That's the tiebreak.

The season is looking good so far, based on these factors:
- The three matches we've played (and taken points in) so far are all matches we lost last season (@Odd 2004:1-3,2005:1-1 - vs. Ham-Kam 2004:0-3,2004:1-0 - @Brann 2004:0-1,2005:0-0). In other words, we are 5 points ahead of last season. Last season, we were 8 points behind Rosenborg, who won the league, so if we can win one more match we lost last season, and otherwise do exactly as last season, it's a gold for us!
- Our new goal keeper, Bo Andersen, is fantastic. Only let in one goal so far, and that was on a penalty kick. Unfortunately, he's only in the club on loan untill June, when Knut Borch, our usual goal keeper, is healed from injury. There are some, though, who claim that Troms

This is highly lame. I won't be able to catch the game on tuesday, because I'll be on a bus back to my home via maryland. LAME-O. I'm gonna see if my parents can tape it

edit: NOT, looks like I'll be tuning in for this bad larry. I hope it's not another 0-0, but I'll take anything, well besides a blowout
