Well I'll be taking the ACT here soon for all that fun junk and Collage.

I went ahead and signed up for the Writing assessment too.

Anyways, basically and in general ... what can I expect? Any tips?

April 9th is the date of the test from what I've seen. I just registered online today myself.

Anyone else taking these tests soon?

There's just such a big deal around these, and the SAT's and other exams and such. I just guess I want to know, should I relax over this and just look over things here and there, and take it easy, or really get prepared for a challenging task?

{edit: sorry if there's already a thread for this ...)

I found the ACTs and SATs to be pretty easy, but I've always had a knack for tests, standardized tests especially. For the SATs, study vocabulary. Other than that, I don't know what to tell you, except good luck!

I'm honestly not the best test taker, really.

But I do find most exams and State assessments to be pretty easy (they're always easier than just the class tests and such).

So yeah, hope that luck is with me.

my tip is go to while either hungover, still drunk from earlier, or still drinking. it worked out alright for me.

from what i recall when i took it, the test itself was rather easy, it was the how loooong it took that really made it suck. By the last section i really didn't care what i put down, i was just getting so anxious to leave... really more of an endurance test than an intillectual test.

I have trouble sitting still or concetrating for long, so the test was basically torture. I wish they could split it up into different days, i'm sure everyone in my boat would do a hell of alot better.

Yeah, I read over the preperation at actstudent.org, and it sounds like the tests goes on from about 8:00 AM, to 1:30 PM. Yay ...

I got a 31 on the ACT when I took it in April, and that was even with running out of time on the math portion.

My advice would be to watch the clock, pace yourself so you don't run out of time...and if you're almost out of time, fill in random answers...there is no penalty for guessing(unlike SAT).

Also, it's about four hours of nearly uninterrupted testing, which is bad for people like me who have to use the bathroom more often than a 3-year-old on a long car trip.

I'm taking the SAT's in may I think.

Just ugh. I'm taking an after-school tutoring in SAT math just to be safe.

The ACTs are easy. I never did the Writing Assessment, but I got a 35 overall on the rest (34 math, english; 36 reading, science).

The SATs are a bit more difficult... I'd think. Only 1410 on that. (Then again, I don't know exactly how the scores scale to each other).

I've got a 32. Haven't taken the writing portion, and I think you've got to be crazy for doing so. The only real reason to take the writing section is if the college you want to go to asks for it. Other than that, it's a waist of time and money.

ACT-SAT conversion table I scored 1270 on the SAT (a 28 composite ACT score).

Anyways, do your best but if you don't get a good score, try again. Probably you should not take it anymore than 2-3 times. 4 times is the limit I suggest anyone. These scores aren't everything and are not THE factor for deciding your entrance to college. After all, for my campus, the average SAT score is around 1450-1500 but I still got in?

Prep classes are good because they help you to prepare mentally. As for learning vocab, I dunno--it depends on how much you can retain. Math problems go up through trig, at least through Algebra II. However, prep classes can go only so so far and everyone has a limit of how much knowledge they can retain for the standardized test.

In the end, just do your best and relax.

I didn't even know there was a writing portion available on the ACT. Is this a new thing?

I know the SAT recently added a writing section...don't know about ACT...

I wonder how many people they'll have to hire to grade those zillions of essays...

Back in '02 I believe my best composite was a 25 with my best score period being a 30 in Math.

Yea, not too great. But then, I was probably one of the higher ones up too.

Yes, the writing portion of the ACT is new, optional, and costs additional money. I don't know if it factors into the composite score or not currently (if you take it). Presumably, they're going to eventually make it mandatory.

NSNick: Yes I do believe I read that the Writing Assessment is a new part to it or something.

Well ... I've heard 18 is good, but with everyone here getting in the high 20's and lower 30's, I'd say that's pretty promising.

I have to take the California High School Exit Exam in 2 weeks, I have no idea what those are about. All I know is everyone gets to go home at like 11 in the morning, and everyone in my grade has to stay until 4:30 in the afternoon.

Im thinking that this might not be as important overall as the SAT, considering Im not graduating for another 2 years.

I'm so glad I never had to take standardized tests for college purposes. In Canada, it's basically a "you're in if you have the money" system, for all intents and purposes. There's always SOME program available.

The SAT's can be taken here for sure if you want to apply to an American university, but it's tough to find out info about that.

It is important. If you don't pass this test, you don't graduate high school (even if you are a valedvictorian). However, all you need to do is pass 50% of the questions on the test so it isn't that bad. It just asks you questions on material that you should know in order to survive minimally in the real world.
