Recently, I resumed work on it. I have a HUGE list of things that I need to do to this hack. Plus, I have 2 jobs, I don't always feel like hacking, and I'm going to be moving in a month, so I have no clue when there will be a public demo release. But for those interested in the hack, I just wanted to give you a little update on whats going on.

Race Against Time is now a combination of many things. Original Levels that are altered, plus new levels. New graphics, and some original graphics. There will be SMB2 elements used throughout the game, plus stuff from Dark Mario, and my other SMB3 hack attempts. All of it, crammed into one.

For those who don't know what this hack is about. Its simple. Most levels you start out with 100 seconds on the clock. You have those 100 seconds to collect 100 coins to beat the level. However, with harder enemies, and drastic level changes, it will be impossible to do it in 100 seconds, especially if you want to get bonuses throughout the levels. So, you increase your time by stepping on T-switches, which will give you 10 extra seconds to your clock. Most levels will be like this, but there are exceptions, such as dungeons, and perhaps a few other levels. There may be levels where you can have lots of time, and not have to worry about the time factor.

The beginning of Level 1. What does the platform on the left with the door remind you of?

RECAP

This is the T-Switch.

Stepping on this will give you 10 extra seconds.

This shows off the new ground.

The detailed vine.

The mean clouds.

If you don't have a Leaf to become Raccoon Mario, you can still reach the cloud platforms by climbing up this vine.

The beginning of Level 2.

Level alteration.

This is similar to an area in Super Mario Bros. 2. This is Level 3 of World 1. The Dark Mario Level 1 was scrapped, because it wasn't that good with the Time factor, and I'm using certain elements from the level in the new Level 1.

Some new graphics.

My Special World 3-5

At the beginning of the level, you jump in the water, and you have to swim down a long long path. You will eventually see the opening above, but you can't pass through because of this:

So, you must continue on...........

You can break those blocks with the white turtle blocks. But.......

Its a trap!!!! Mario has come to a dead end with Bloobers!!

Run, er, swim, Mario! SWIM FOR YOUR LIFE!

The enemy is too close!!

Shit, you forgot to get the white turtle block! XD

You will still have to access the bottom part of this water level. Trust me, this level is going to put you to the test.

Most of world 1 is done. But since its not completely done, I went on to World 3. You're going to love the dungeon of World 1. Its pretty neat. But, I already have too many pics, and I wanted to recap some for those who don't know what this is. I always wanted to make this for Level 5 of World 3. Oh what fun!

I honestly didn't even know you'd stopped working on it for some time, except possibly the fact that I noticed your old thread got closed It's good to hear you've decided to start working on it again though

The platform in the first screenshot that you're talking about sort of reminds me of the place you find yourself in after going through the door you fall down to at the beginning of Mario 2 I guess that could be it, especially since you said there will be stuff from SMB2 used here.

Most of the other pictures there do look pretty familiar, so I won't comment on those again, but the ones of level 3-5 look mildly interesting. Maybe because most of the pictures consist mainly of water, but whatever the cause, your comments on the level make me quite eager to play it as well. I'd like to see just how truly hard it is

I for one will wait for a demo of this for however long it takes, so take your time on it

Now that I'm working on World 3, there will be brand new, never-before seen pictures. No more recaps of the first few levels. However, I want to leave the rest of World 1 to the player.

I'm glad that this SMB3 hack is not dead, we need more quality SMB3 hacks. I like the eye candy also.

"There may be levels where you can have lots of time, and not have to worry about the time factor."

And that fits into a hack called Race Against Time...how? Seems like people will be playing it primarily because of this one particular unique quality, and having levels without limited time basically removes the one thing that really makes this hack worth playing above many others. Why, then, would you have stages like this?

If you notice from his screenshots, you start off with UNDER 100 time, and you WILL have to press the T switches to get more time.

So basically, you're racing against time but you can give yourself more time by using the T switches.

Race Against Time sounds apporitate for this hack.

And he said there MAY be levels... may is the word. It doesn't mean all the levels will have lots of time, so.

Special stages maybe? I don't know whats going to happen in the progress of this hack. Just letting people know its still alive.

Sketchie: I wasn't saying that the hack was inappropriately named, but rather that levels with an abundant amount of time doesn't fit with the hack's unique theme, and it's that theme that is going to make it stand out and worth playing.

Kuja: That may work, but it just seems to me that having entire stages (such as dungeons) with lots of time which thus don't fit in with the rest of the game wouldn't be a good idea. Even if it doesn't follow the usual collect-100-coins formula for beating that stage, there should still at least be a little bit of a sense of urgency.

You've really got me wondering where that door leads to in the first pic.

Glad to see you're still working on this hack. A different idea that seems to have SMB3 "experts" to come out and try their luck. I must have not paid really close attention when you mentioned it before, because the 100 coins collected in a level sounds new to me.

Oh well, a lot of ASM hacks, seems like you're getting it down .

The more time thing made me think of possibly adding small rooms that pause the time, for resting or some other reason, then the time would continue when you exit the room. Did you fix the running slowing down the timer glitch?

I don't think the slowing down timer thing can be fixed. I tried a few things to try to fix it and it seems the code that draws new tiles during scrolling takes priority over the timer code and there's nothing that can be done about it :/

Looks like an awesome hack. Though it might be better if the T-switches were more like coins, you just have to touch them instead of jumping on them. I can easily see someone dying a lot because they missed the switch or something along those lines.

Here are a full set of pictures that show off most of the now complete World 3-5.

This is the beginning of the level.

You jump in the water, and start to swim down the long tunnel.

Still swimming...

Its a trap at the end of the tunnel, as several Bloobers await Mario. However, all you need is a white turtle block. The above opening is there so if you fall down, you have to swim all the way back up there.

Use the white turtle block to break the barrier, so you can continue on.

You're now at the bottom of the ocean. Don't forget. The time is still counting down, and you have 100 coins to collect!

It will be tricky at the bottom as you have to deal with a lot of fish and currents.

Ah, you're friend, the T-Switch. Add 10 seconds to my clock bitch!

Some fish and coins.

I ran out of time playing through the level to take these pictures. Oh well.

A few things I forgot to mention:

- I re-added the Music Mushroom. Since lives are no longer an issue, when you get a 1-up mushroom, it cycles through different songs, incase you are tired of hearing the same level music for the time you are playing that level. It no longer affects your score either.

- There may be a few other features as well, like getting Kuribo Shoes from power-up blocks, or some other things. I am not certain what any of them will be, but I definately will add some other stuff.

- All the other versions that I hacked, including Dark Mario, basically what I did was take scraps from them, and incorporate them into this hack in slightly different ways. Like, remember the two pipes in the water at the beginning of the first level in Dark Mario? Well, since the level is scrapped, I used the pipes at the end of the new first level in Race Against Time. However, they are used slightly in a different way. As I said, this hack is a combination of many things. There are still some things from other versions that I hacked, that will be incorporated differently in this game.

- ASM Tutorial 3 is coming soon! It will be prettier than my last two. Plus, if you don't have the previous tutorials, don't worry, as I will get them back up!

I could see that helping or hurting in that water level, because the shoe makes you sink to the bottom of the water, which could help you in timing or cause you to sink to the bottom of the sea. I also think that the T switch should be made easier to get too...

Here are a few pictures that show off the complete World 3-4. The level was made entirely from scratch, so its brand new.

This little pool with the waterfall was a vision I had about Super Mario Bros. 2. I put it in this level.

A few spinies and bricks.

There's a T-Switch in the block above.

You have to deal with a few Boomerang Brothers.

I can only find one thing to complain about, and it's in the third picture of those four there. The bottoms of the 'x blocks' (the ones on the right hand half of the screen) cut off and look bad. I see that only appears where there's nothing but sky below the block, but even so, I find it quite noticeable

Otherwise, those look quite good. Keep it up

Sorry Karadur, but I don't know what you mean. Explain it to me again. The only thing I can think of, is that the game's engine cuts off the blocks, thats why it looks like that.

I have some more pics.

These show the dungeon of World 2.

The beginning of the dungeon.

Some Dry Bones.

Can you get by this Thwomp without getting hurt?

There is a secret passage that has opened up. I wonder whats inside?

Time for a showdown with the Fire Brother!

Not a problem. Here's a picture with the areas I'm talking about circled:

If it is indeed a fault of the game engine, then don't worry about it too much unless you can think of a way to fix it

Those pictures of the castle look pretty nice. No problems that stand out, so nice work in that respect The first one reminds me of one of the areas of level 8-4 in the first Mario game I don't know why it does, but as for all those pictures they're looking good anyways
