Umm... I don't think so. Look at their defensive corps last season (before a certain number of them went into free agency). Chelios, Scheider, Lidstrom, Hatcher, Wooley, Dandenault, arguably the best defense in the league right there, and that IS including Jersey's as well.

On the other hand, a salary cap and a few rule changes can fix all that.

Trap killed hockey. Remove the red line!

That's why the league NEEDS A SALARY CAP! BADLY! I'm getting sick of seeing the same teams playing the trap in the Finals every year, especially Detroit.

And anyways, the Red Wings are bigger spenders than the Leafs. At least the Leafs don't necessarily have a "trap" defensive style that the Wings and Devils do.

As for the Holik signing, I still don't get that, even to this very day. $9,000,000 for a guy who has yet to put out one 20-goal season for the Rangers (as far as I know)? He's not that good, really. I can sign much better players than him (ie: Pavel Bure, Alex Kovalev, Zigmund Palffy, etc) on EHM for less than that.

Like the Toronto Maple Leafs haven't contributed to the league's woes with all their free agent signings?

Rangers -> Bobby Holik -> $9,000,000/year. That's what did it.

I like the Red Wings, ever since I was little

Actually, like it or not, know it or not, they're the reason the league is currently in it's labor deficit. I remember reading somewhere that they've spent a grand total of at least $72 mil in player salaries EVEN after they let Hasek go to free agency (who's gonna re-retire if a new CBA isn't resolved by this summer by the way. The only team that's surpassed Detroit in terms of player salaries and free agency are the Rangers, and that was then, this is now. They aren't big spenders, anymore. The only talent they have are Jagr, Nylander, some worthy youngsters that will one day develop into marquee goal scorers (ie: Lundmark), and their goaltending corps (Weekes for sure; Dunham generally is good as well, but had a miserable year last year after coming off from that injury).

Ain't gonna happen - they'd need all 30 owners to agree to a deal like that and virtually every owner had a good laugh at the proposal.

Now, bump that price up to $6b...

Hmm...interesting story that appeared on Yahoo! Sports.

An investment firm as asked to buy all 30 teams for $3.8 billion dollars.
Is the NHL really worth $3.8 billion dollars? The beloved commisioner invited the people behind the proposal to talk with the owners of the teams.

Hmm...what do you think?

The story can be read here: Two Boston companies make joint bid to buy NHL

Well, the new "deadline" is May 1. It's not a real deadline but it's a good time to have a deal done so that the draft, promotions, season ticket sales, etc. can start going on. The longer it goes after that date, the harder a sell next season's going to be.

well, this is one of the unfortunate things about doing sports for a living. Anyways, hockey will come back again, once one of the sides gives in more than they want to. It's lose-lose for both sides since owners aren't making money but yet still owe property taxes and what not and players don't get paid so they have to play else where, which is hard on the kids since their fathers are away...

It made me so mad when there wasn't any hockey. I've been so bored this school year cuz theres barely anything on TV thats any good. Something that made it kinda worse, I live in Ohio and there isn't many hockey fans, just like 50/50 for basketball and football so all of my friends were laughing at me cuz my favorite sport was gone this year. I like the Red Wings, ever since I was little and Columbus just cuz its our home team.

Well no, the season's already been cancelled and we've all finally come to terms with that.

This week should be interesting if nothing else - the NHL will have a Board of Governors meeting for the first time in a while, and the NHLPA will have two sets of meetings; one for players and one for agents.

Doesn't matter. No matter what they say, whether they've uncancelled the season or are holding more CBA talks, there's no chance in hell we're going to be seeing any NHL action this year. Next year? MAYBE, if they come to their senses and still hold onto their aspirations for a salary cap. Look at the NFL. Their cap makes it a fun sport to follow in both the regular and off season and the playoffs (especially the SB), so many star players entering free agency every year. I could only begin to imagine what the NHL would be like if it followed in their footsteps...

Also, about the NBA's cap: I thought it was a player's cap, not a team cap. Unless $50 is the limit to a FULL player's contract (ex: $10 mil, 5 years), I dunno.

We don't really... well... we recognize the Miracle but don't really celebrate it. And we only recognize it because you beat the hated Soviets.

Why wouldn't they show Minnesota's run from the early 90's when they faced Pittsburgh?

When in withdrawl, watch the classics. Since it is the silver anniversary of the Miracle on Ice, ESPN will probably be promoting it to no end, and showing it on ESPN/Classic all week. It's been on twice already since Sunday...

FSN (FOX Sports Net) North has been showing "Minnesota Hockey Classics," which have included some of the great games. One was game 6 of the "North Stars improbable run to the Stanley Cup" which was sometime in the 70's, judging by the quality of the tape. Although, they've also been showing some college games, which don't really tickle my fancy. There's also some of the Wild games dating back to the team's re-inception in 2001.

Since Gary Bettman and Co. are gonna go on a "he said-he said" deal, I say that he is dumped, Goodenow is dumped, and we start again with a clean slate. Those two have really fucked up the sport to no end....

Not for another 2 weeks at least, barring something unannounced.

Laughing my ass off.

So much for that. All of a sudden it was like it was back on...but no. Totally died out.

Well, they say 3rd time's the charm, but I think I heard that neither side is meeting within for a number of weeks.

I have never seen a season cancelled twice within a 4-day period. Everyone involved should be absolutely ashamed of themselves with all this rumor spreading and whatnot.

At least the talks were civil, and that's more than can be said for many of them in the process... bah. If they can't agree to something soon, the PA's going to end up on the short side of the stick.

I think someone jinxed it. Jathys accused me of jinxing it. But the season is still canceled. Although with the poll earlier, I had already thought the season was long gone. *sigh*

I always have my dreams...

Minnesota and Columbus aren't bad teams - if anything, the lockout shouldn't hurt them much because they've built up great fanbases (and Minnesota shouldn't have lost their team in the first place).

There's gonna be a few teams scrambling though - IF this is the deal.
