It seems to me that no matter how many new level designs or special graphics are in a hack, it's still plain old Mario World. The most recent hack I've been really impressed with is BMF's. The extensive ASM hacks make it -almost- a whole new game, which is what I tend to look for.

Well, honestly, I don't download that many hacks...but the thing that matters the most is Level Design. This may just be because I haven't been exposed to the mass amount of hacks you guys have, and I'm still illusioned and optimistic. Heh.

The hack I've been working on forever (Still only got a world and 2 levels done) has hardly any ExGFX (though it seems like a lot to me.) and absolutely no ASM (because I am an editor whore) and mainly focuses on level design and trying to keep the Mario feel while adding a new gameplay twist or 2.. So far, I think I've somewhat succeeded.

Anyway, just my 2 cents.

Quite honestly, SMW has been hacked to death so I've got to the point where I prefer to see ASM hacks over good level design first. An ASM hack will draw me to play the hack, the level design will turn me off. But good level design will just make me say "oh that's cool, he can make good levels" and I'll play maybe one world and quit.

I agree with knuck though, if someone did some ASM hacks to "enhance" SMW, I'd so be pysched to play through it with the same levels and graphics. Look at SMA series, the games had some minor game engine changes and prettier graphics but the SAME LEVEL DESIGN and people ate them up

Note: This is not my general feeling towards all hacks of all games. Just SMW

Good level design is essential. I've passed up plenty of hacks with pretty graphics and ASM tweaks because their levels sucked. Good use of ExGFX is also nice, and some ASM hacking is always a bonus, but if the levels are boring or overly difficult (bolded for emphasis!) the game just sucks.

Level design plays a good part.
What's ASM without it? A bunch of fancy code in an unorganized fashon.
I don't want a hack that is linear, crowded, or cheaply difficult. I want something clever, beautiful, and moderately difficult with a good hint of puzzlework. It shows that you could do without the fancy stuff and put together a world with what you already have and still make it fun and interesting.

I'd lve to play normal SMW with 2 players at the same time.
Maybe a timeattack version of SMW, or one where the enemies are harder.

I'd love to try any of those, even if the level design, and GFX, were the same.

ASM Hacks should be in there, because there arn't much of them in hacks, but Level Design should fit as well otherwise it would be boring.
ExGFX can be used to make the hack look cool, but that's not necessary.

Level design and ExGFX are overused.
ASM has barely been used and even if gets used a lot, you can always make something new.
And ASM isn't hard as people think anyway.

Level design is most important, though the ExGFX and ASM hacks can definitely set more of a mood for your hack.

I like the level design a bit better. But then again, I like ExGFX somtimes as well depending on what's being used...

Level design is the most important, followed closely by ExGFX, which can really set the mood but isn't necessary. ASM hacks are completely unnecessary and don't really add anything (though they impress the masses.)

Hey!

I'm just Wondering about this. I hear a lot about these subjects, so I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask, right?
