If it's completed, and it's a game I'm familiar with and still care about, hell yeah I'll go out of my way to play a level-only hack.

As for demos, though, If I had as much spare time as I used to, I'd play those all the time, but now I limit myself only to those whose screenshots look exceptional. And that's not easy to do when the only changes are to the level design and there's only one world's worth of new levels.

If the levels are good, I'll play it. New graphics are nice, sure, but it's the levels that make the game.

I enjoy playing level-only hack's as long as there not as hard as hell. For example, I make it to a part of the level and die at that same part over 50 times (i'll pretty much quit after 20 though).

Although level-only hack's are fun i'd much rather enjoy playing graphic hack's.

I probably play enough ROM hacks in general, but when I do, I usually don't mind level-only hacks, just as long as there's some challenge (not too much) and some difference from the original.

I mean the old Frank's ROM hacks for SMB1 were level-only (minus 3rd) and I liked messing with those for the longest time. Probably one of the reasons I regged on Ace's back in '02 to begin with.

I definately play level-only hacks, as long as the level design isn't HORRIBLE I find myself enjoying them very often.

Ok!

I like level-only hacks if nicely done like Super Mario Bros. 2 - 2nd Run for example.

Originally my next Mario Kart hack would've been a level-only hack. Though, since I teamed up with Stifu doing the graphics we decided to completely overhaul the game, hence the new title "Epic Battle - Impala Kart Courses".

And I have to admit, playing with competely new characters on a new course is simply amazing! And the best thing is, as the creator I can already play a new Mario Kart long before it's official release.

If the levels are good, sure. Good level design is the most important feature of a game. Cool ASM hacks and jaw-dropping graphic edits are definetely a nice bonus, but they're not required. Consider the fact that the original game didn't have them, and in many cases was awesome. (Because who hacks sucky games? ) Adding Ninja Mario and Ice Mario to SMB3 is cool, but look how good SMB3 was without them, because it had good levels.

I can always get down with a hack that has levels only edited, that's what makes hacks unique. & I always go back to play Schwa's MM4 hack because the level design rocks!

And I can't wait to play DurfarC's hacks because they look like very well done levels, And we need more MM hacks.

I first play a few levels to get a look how it is and if I like it, I play it.
But I prefer new GFX as well.

"Sometimes" means that you play them. As long as you've played more than one level hack, you play them.

I agree on this one. It depends on which game we are talking about, but the original games always stay gold. But if I see a hack where the graphics are very well done (like Super Mario Odyssey), of course I download it.

Yeah, these are boring. Especially "sprites-only" hacks.

Level-only are WAY better than graphic and ASM. That's because a level-only hack is a REBORN version of the origional. When I hack, levels are TOP priority; graphics are lowest priority and palettes are second higest because they compliment the remix feel to the hack. Take Megaman 4 Gadget Master, the first MM4 hack ever, done by yours truly; all the levels are different, and that's why I got the good feedback from my friends Googie and the others.

I like to release level hacks of games that nobody's ever hacked before. I try to avoid overhacked games but instead concentrate on games not hacked, and find data for them.

I still play level-only, if they're good enough. The catch is that it isn't really hard to hack little bits of the engine and change some of the gfx. Many popular much-hacked games have tools ready for this kind of editing. There's really no excuse to not throw some eye candy here and there.

I forgot to say: If the levels in a hack look similar to the ones in the original game, I won't play it. I've seen many hacks like that, especially SMB3 hacks. But as Karadur and Chill Penguin said, I love to see creatively, well done levels.

Oddly enough, when it comes to SMW hacks, I prefer new graphics and stuff. Maybe it's because there are so many of these.

I consider Super Mario hacks (SMW or SMB1/2/3) as beginner hacks if only levels are changed. These games are easy to hack. However, making new levels for games like Mega Man (mostly 4, 5 and 6) aren't always easy.

Aslo, level only hacks bores me to hell. Back in 2001-2002, it was fun, but now times have changed.
I myself am not going to make a smw hack without new GFX and ASM hacks, wich means pretty much, i'm never making a smw hack again.

Yeah, for SMW and SMB1 (the two games with the most hacks for them), I'd have to agree. It's kind of the same way with me on Zelda Classic, something has to really stand out, whether it's graphics or the idea.

For over-hacked games, more than level design will be needed to make it stand out.

Heh, I'm with knuck on that one, I'll never try hacking SMW again .

It's always fun to see the creative level designs people can come up with. Level only are the first hacks I made/played whenever I first came here (2002). The other add-ons are nice, but it wouldn't keep me from playing a good level hack.

I have nothing against 'level only' hacks, but I do not play them. There are far too many editors and techniques to edit so much more than just levels. Graphics, text, asm, stats, palettes, etcc.... so many other things to edit. Though it's not true in every case, I feel some level only hacks are created because people are afraid to get their hands dirty in finding data, using hex editors, or any other method of hacking that isn't included in whatever editor it is that they are using to hack the levels. Level only hacks are a good start for beginning hackers, surely. There are countless other ways to improve a game that doesn't include level hacking, and hacking ONLY the levels feels like kind of an unused pool of talent and potential.

But that's just me.

I'm sure other people feel strongly against my opinion, but it is just my opinion.

Having said that, I have seen some stellar level-only hacks out there, with clever design and interesting ideas. I just need more. Not as in "I'm being greedy, give me more" but "Show me your true talents and lack of fear or gumption to try new things".

This is a long thread. Click here to view it.
