Not the dialog being demostrated, but the main Photoshop window which parents all image windows.

Already told you. "The 'grey useless window' is part of the MDI interface... thingamajig." Since you're so keen on Wikipedia - as am I! - here's their take on it. I'd also have to second your theory. When you minimize something in Windows 3.0 (the first Photoshop version for Windows (2.0) came out in 1991, and Windows 3.1 came out in April of 1992), it became a 32x32 icon, and Photoshop with more than a few windows would mean a lot of icons. People didn't have big screens back then, so it'd mean a lot of icons on the desktop. Which is why the Program Manager used MDI, for example, to begin with.

And yes, let's get back on topic.

I don't see what's so useless about that... It avoids the need to have all the PS windows scattered about mixed in with other windows, and helps keep speed up and memory usage down by not having to redraw anything but a solid patch of gray below them.

Also, lol @ the thread title. Maybe we should get back on topic here?

Let's face it - if you're accustomed enough to anything you'll find other stuff weird. Nevertheless, discounting even this effect, I used Photoshop and Imageready both around a year each to do literally everything in, yet I thought after using PSP for a week that it was much better, which is why I like it so much. Not because it inherently supports a lot more functionality, but because it does what it does in a way that pleases me more than the alternatives.

1) The 'grey useless window' is part of the MDI interface... thingamajig. Blame Microsoft.
2) Bullshit. I know of -continents- newer than Photoshop 5. Compare with Photoshop CS or PSP 9 and then we'll talk.

I use PSP 7, I used to use 6 and think that I couldn't get used to 7 and I also used to use 5 and think 6 was too different. I don't wana get 8 though if it takes forever to load. I... well, I don't use any other killer software that I can think of at the moment. I want to customize my wallpaper to use an HTML page now though!

I use NuspherePHPEd when coding in PHP. I think it makes things a lot easier to point out and makes it kickass alltogether.

Here is a screenshot...

They have one for Linux but im using the one for Windows.

As I understand it, either Photoshop caught up or GIMP caught up. It was probably the GIMP doing the catching up. Photoshop 5... I used that a year ago at school, so it was old when I used it anyway.

I tried PSP once, but the thing is just too weird.

PSP > Photoshop. ANYTIME.
I just don't like the... Proffesionalism to photoshop.. I've never gotten used to it so I sticked to PSP. The first PSP I had was PSP7 wich, in my opinion, is still better than PSP8. PSP8 takes about 8 seconds to fully start up

Vmware both for Linux and Windows, it's just so... godly for testing out OS's. With some luck you can get exotic OS's to work in VGA mode. And is just perfect for us who have no spare computer for "expriments". Althought this program costs some so... well there was a open sourced Virtual machine too. But I heard it wasn't as good. Besides it's a good way to test a OS before actually installing it.

GIMP is... well, wierd. I'm actually mostly used to Paintshop pro, since that was the editor I grew up with. Althought at one point I used a program called Flamingo.

Oh!! On VLC, this works on most platforms too.

But it REALLY shines when you start using the streaming features. I've been able to watch TV shows streamed over a WAN and LAN before, it's fun.

*watches your P3 blast past my Celery 800mhz, even though mine has 192MB* Mine takes about 3 1/2 minutes to open PS8, but it's good anyway. (As compared to Windows... It used to start up fine but all of a sudden it's added "wait for 5 minutes doing absolutely nothing" to its bootup process. But starting up from Hibernate mode takes like 7 seconds. )

A few programs I simply must have on any Windows install:

-Mozilla and Proxomitron: There's links to them in my layout. 'Nuff said. I install these on every computer I intend to use for an extended period of time.

-Textpad: This is a frickin awesome text editor. Open multiple documents and switch between them with one click. Spell checking, syntax highlighting, macros, customizeable shortcut keys, and more features than you can shake an MS Word CD at. (Unfortunately the only program on this list that's not free. Buy it anyway.)

-AVG: Last virus infection: Long before I installed this baby.

-VLC Player: Plays just about any movie you can throw at it, works just like a VCR (if your joypad supports keyboard emulation, you can even use it as a remote ), supports subtitles and multiple audio channels, variable-speed playback with any format, built-in volume control, and playlists. This thing is an anim

Well.. that Rydain metioned Eterm I'm going to say I prefer aterm as mine. It does the prettiness that she mentioned. Though I've never gotton Eterm to compile. Another thing is that it blends in with WindowMaker or AfterStep by default (though I currently have scrollbars hidden).

That's a lot better than a P3 1.0 GHz processor with 128MB RAM. :\

That's not even basically the system, but simply the resources the program uses. And that's the only real negative part I noticed with PSP8.

I have an AMD XP 2800+ CPU with Barton core, along with 512 DDR-RAM(PC 400) and Windows XP Home with all updates. When I'm using the computer, I usually have more than 300 MB left when Firefox and Thunderbird are open for example (so the required 60+ MB for PSP8 are no problem) - and PSP8 takes nearly 20 seconds to start it up, when it is not cached. PSP7 started up much faster than that

So do I (same version), since December 1997 Small (2MB on disk, 4MB RAM without images), fast, supports a lot of image formats, better than Paint for everything yet still easy to use ...

And for everything Paint Shop Pro 4 can't do, I use Photoshop 6 (since 2001), or sometimes both together, and I never felt the need to upgrade either ...

I prefer a combination of PSP8 and The GIMP 2 for picture editing. Since the last one starts up in a couple of seconds, uses only a little more than 20 MB or RAM, it is great for pasting screenshots and such; the FU script filter engine also is very neat.

PSP8 has a good layout and finally I can reach the current tool's setting in the main window without the need to have a floatin window (such as thickness of a pen and so on).
Sadly the start up time is much longer than version 7, but then I'll go with GIMP for smaller edits.
For created animated GIFs, nothing beats Animation Shop Pro. Easy, very fast and a perfect user interface make the decision for me easy.
