Ashita no Joe(Anime) - 1970-'71
Ashita no Joe 2(Anime) - 1980-'81
Ashita no Joe(Manga) - 1968-'73
Hajime no Ippo(Anime) - 2000-'02
Hajime no Ippo(Manga) - 1989-2004

I think you mean when I said "I don't think you can compare Ippo and Kenshin. Now Ippo and Ashita no Joe? That's a whole different story."

In which case I meant you can't compare Ippo and Kenshin because they are different genres.(sports and action/martial arts) Ashita no Joe and Hajime no Ippo can both be compared much more easily because they are both boxing anime/manga and they were done by the same people. In my opinion, Ashita no Joe is better. It's just has much more of a legendary quality to it.

Can't say I've heard of that series.

Is it older ... and are you guys saying, it's "that" much better?

Or it's "that" much worse than Kenshin?

Both Kenshin and Hellsing are much better in manga format, yes. I really agree with Thoughtless' er, well, thought, about how manga and anime differ. Manga like Hellsing and Berserk, were much better than the anime which could have been improved on had they reflected the manga more. What someone should learn from such a discussion is that manga is not merely anime in book form. Everything is changed once a manga turns into an anime. Personally, I feel that, having owned many manga and buying them monthly, that manga are much more capable of being and often are drawn out and more extensive. Also, the wait for manga issues as opposed to anime is longer and gives you a lot of time to ponder about the plot, thus allowing the manga-ka to usemore apparent and effective literary "tricks". Personally, I feel that a cliffhanger in a manga is much more gut wrenching than one in an anime. It drives me insane when I can't read more. (I'm exaggerating a little bit, here. )

Kenshin was THE anime when it got out. It was the best thing available.

As of today standard, it's not the best thing anymore.

Kenshin played in japan in 96-97 if I remember well, that was almost 10 years ago.

As stated above, Manga does leave for a lot more character depth and stuff.

But the manga for Hellsing is VASTLY different to the series. The major differences are the dark humor in the Manga which is all but gone in the Anime series, several major characters and huge story differences.

Some anime follow the manga very closely (ie, Fruits Basket) but then the Manga continues and goes further with the story....

And there's manga like Evangelion, which is actually even darker than the series.

The manga for Kenshin, from what I've seen is very good and has better character development. And the art is teh purty.

I've heard the same thing about Hellsing. Are manga's generally better than most series? (Although I've seen a lot of anime over the past few years, I'm still pretty new to manga's)

Yes and no. A great deal of manga does hold superiority over the series but at times the series is actually better.

Mangas are considered better because of time, they offer more time to go in depth with details and build characters. Making a series is usually a race to get ratings and keep them, which forces them to exclude many details ( not big but still details)

But it is usually preferences, if you hate to read and not use your imagination then you might enjoy the tv series because you don't have to stimulate your brain to create the images.

True Dat. Also, the historical credibility of Kenshin is a bit sketchy at times, while it does offer a cool aspect; incorporating some history with anime. It blends fiction and non fiction. I find that cool. But it's a bit biased towards the Choshu rebels, unlike Peacemaker Kurogane, which is the exact opposte; partisan AGAINST the Choshu, labeling them as brutal murderers, for the most part.

I like the series mediocrity.... in fact, I like that I don't have to think too much about Kenshin. The show is just one that's fun to watch. It's not brilliant, it's not deep or insightful, but it's just plain enjoyable.

As for the Manga, it's just appearing here in Australia, I've read one volume and found it quite enjoyable.

Yea, if you speak of the series and OVA. The OVA is mediocre, the series a little bit better. But the manga is really something. Not extraordinary, but it adds more depth to Watsuki's characters. But nowadays, I don't see as many Kenshin fanboys(and girls) around.

Eh... kinda depends. The OAVs are great, and the manga is great, but the anime series itself generally has animation that is only decent due to the budget and has all those lame filler arcs towards the end and random filler episodes strewn throughout the first two thirds of it as well, so it's only a "fair to okay," and definitely overrated.

You haven't changed your views at all Thoughtless. (Assuming you still happen to remember me?)

Your opinion doesn't surprise me.

I really do admit that I should see more of the series to give my full judgement though, so yeah.

I voted "Not at all" since in the general aspect of things peopel consider Kenshin to be a good show or great in a sense, but...

The manga holds the true power of those praises. Simply the manga roxs while the series is quite good at best and lame ass at worst. Especially when the series hits the Kyoto Arc, that is gold, but when he derails the storyline of the manga and goes all 'Christian storyline and Ki storyline' then yes, it's greatness is lowered to a simple 'good'

It is one of those shows in which you have to wait a bit until it picks up, once it does it won't let you go, until after the Kyoto arc, to which I just explained is lame. Otherwise simply buy the manga or read it from somewhere, it is better.

ditto... kenshin is a good anime but it isn't the anime standard. Heck, i don't think any anime is the standard.

I have yet to see kenshin but I know enough of the storyline to like it.

Considering all the attention it gets anymore, yea, I'd say it is, but like Tarale said, that doesn't mean I don't think it's good either.

I really like Kenshin. As an anime its fantastic, but its definatly not the best anime of all time. It may be a little overrated but you cant deny that its really good.

I think that it's overrated -- but that doesn't mean that I don't think it's good.

Kenshin is a very enjoyable series and it's one of my favorites. But I think that this "best anime series out there" rating is definitely overrating the series. It's just a nice, fun series.
