The overworld looks too square and bland...
Level design needs work.

I realize that you're trying, but you need to try harder. It's best not to make everything assembly-line productions.

The path had only one error I saw. There was just a path instead of a path coming from a cliff (In the Event Editor). Other than that, I think I am leaving it just as it is for a level I am making. Layer 3 will move up and down to act as a quick-changing tide. Adds some challenge.

KATW: Thanks for the help! Now it looks better, but now I have to edit the events some.

I will show a pic of this later, as I have some more work to do on the overworld.

Good thing you fixed it, got an updated picture to show if it looks ok now?

Well, I did a bit of experimenting with water tiles and I THINK I found a solution.... Use palette six tiles 10, 3 and 4D. They do have a type of "water color" in their makeup. Just se them along the dege of the water and itll turn out okay.... Just ask if you need a picture...

Sorry, Jesper. I will fix that.

The weird pathway is fixed. Now it looks a little better.

The overworld is my worst area. I can't seem to get the right tiles. I could use ExGFX, but I am not that good with designing graphics yet.

Yeah it kind of does look like a puddle. Maybe I will try to fix that. This hack was just started not too long ago, so it will gradually be improved.

I think the overworld looks good except for that weird pathway. :s

Hmmm... yeah. They look more like drills. I will make them that. Now is to make the Goombas wear the hats and then I am kind of done with the underground sprites for now.

On the map it just looks like the game loaded the wrong GFX. :o

I dunno, the water still seems to hover over everything else... it seems like a giant puddle if anything . Maybe... Ill look into how to fix this...

Looking pretty ok, but the path in the first screenshot wich connects the two islands looks really weird. :o

As you can see, I fixed the overworld and made Mining Koopas. The Bullet Bills have been changed to look like missles. The message box is my avatar. Oh! And my posting background is another screenshot of the game, but the background isn't normally black.

So now what do you think?

The water kinda looks like it's elevated from the ground. Which looks really weird. Also, in the level design, those note blocks look like they would be a little unfair, if you were jumping out of the way of the red Koopa, you would hit the block and then die if you were small Mario.

As a rule I try and keep invisible hit-from-below blocks away from bad guys and holes, if at all possible.

Not trying to discourage you, just giving you some ideas for improvement.

Well... I know it needs some work. I just wanted to let people know that I am making a new hack.

The two castles will be moved. I just highlighted the overworld and pressed Delete on Layer 2. I keep the levels there so I know what events they use and what order they go in.

Yeah, it's a bit squarish and flat. I plan on fixing that.

The water... I can fix that... just can't find the right tiles.

Eh, OW needs some work, levels need some GFX touchups. And use PNG, its much cleaner....

Okay.... *Begin my OW fixation rant*

First Screenie: I believe you plan on moving those castles, correct? Either that, or put some land under them... The main island looks too "squareish", and too bland... add some trees or jagged edges (If you are up to it of course). The event tiles are okay, just make sure you arent messing up the overall presentation with too many path tiles. I do see some "The path tile magically extends into the ocean" type stuff. You CAN make custom path tiles if need be, just to let you know. Oh, and, does the land hidden by the hill curve upwards? Looks just a bit weird, the land is here -----|___|_____.

Second Screenie: Wow.... not in a very positive way though. Its very bland.... not much attention to the detail of the land. Sure theres a few trees, and hills, but is that it? The waterfall also needs some work. It seems to "fall" from nowhere. I know you want to have it coming from the cave, but sometimes things just dont come out right, and I cant even tell you how to fix it. While we are on the topic of water, your water tiles are also weird. It looks like the water is actually elevated above the ground level, making for a weird effect of a geletan cube of water. .

*Steps off OW rant Soapbox*

Its a good start, but now you have to go and fix the errors .

I am now making a new hack called Mario: Land of Relaxation. It is just getting started, but I have the perfect story.

Bowser, being defeated, wanted to take over some land, whether it was Dinosaur Land or not. He was looking around when he came upon the Land of Relaxation, where many people go to relax and not worry about much. Bowser then decides to take it over. He and his troops took it over, making all the people vanish. But Toad, who happened to leave just in time, went to the Mushroom Kingdom and told Mario of the incident. Mario is now headed to save this great land.

Yeah... I stink at storytelling. Anyway, I plan on having many ExGFX that I am making. I am also redoing the entire overworld.

Here are two pics I took in Lunar Magic.

I also plan to make the Koopas and Goombas in the cave levels wear mining helmets. Comments?
