Pink Floyd is the best band ever in my opinion. I love all eras, the Syd era, the "golden years era" (from Meddle until Wish You Were Here), Roger's era (i love Animals, The Wall and i am starting to get into The Final Cut as well) and the post Waters era (AMLOR is fine, and Division Bell is awesome).
Pink Floyd is very original and made lots of different albums musically, it is very interesting to listen to all their discography, from PATGOD until TDB.
Plus, some of Roger's solo work is great, and Rick Wright's Broken China is a very sweet listen.
Definetely my favorite band.

From what I've gleaned while reading band bios, and listening to band member interviews.

Roger Waters wanted to shift the band more and more into artificiality. Realizing that this was a bad idea, he decided to not jeopardize his own money-grubbing career by actually making the move to this artificial crap.

Just where the hell are you getting that from? Explain it, please.

More than any of Roger's bitchery. And no, the "jazz" influences that remained with the band afterward were forced on him by the other members. He carried the sound onto his solo career, realizing that he is worthless and the only thing that will make him money is sticking to his old guns.

Wow, you're waaay off.

First off, Syd's lyrics were anything but sane. Let's take a looksi, no?
"It's awfully considerate of you to think of me here
And I'm much obliged to you for making it clear
That I'm not here.
And I never knew we could be so thick
And I never knew we could be so blue
And I'm grateful that you threw away my old shoes
And brought me here instead dressed in red
And I'm wondering who could be writing this song.
I don't care if the sun don't shine
And I don't care if nothing is mine
And I don't care if I'm nervous with you
I'll do my loving in the winter. And the sea isn't green
And I love the queen
And what exactly is a dream
And what exactly is a joke."

What imagery? It doesn't make any goddamn sense, and that's the end of it.

Sucked out the jazz influence? Wow, obviously you haven't ever heard anything Roger has done solo. He has fucking trombones backing him up at times... Have you ever heard the Final Cut? He wrote the entire thing... You can't tell me The Gunner's Dream's awesome saxaphone solo wasn't jazz influence, or that Two Suns In the Sunset didn't have jazz influence... What leads you to believe he'd've sucked away jazz influence?

Secondly... You simply cannot attribute the Wall to being Water's soley. You can say he completely wrote the Final Cut, sure... But not the Wall.

Roger Waters is a whiny bitch.

Gates of Dawn > The Wall/any other Waters shit.

And given that Barret is a lyrical imagery genius (something that Waters never was) it takes to the point that he didn't overuse the studio. Rather, he kept it sane and kept the music pure and to its message. I swear, if it weren't for the rest of the damned band Waters would've sucked away all of the jazz influences of Pink Floyd...Mercilessly.

Pink Floyd... Is one of the best bands ever, I think.

Syd is not more talented than Roger waters...

Also, David Gilmour did some pretty awesome stuff. He wrote Fat Old Sun, and hell, that's enough to make me respect a man for life.

Well, at least he's still ghosting...

In any case, I don't normally participate in this stuff... But Talking Heads is just plain good to me, and Pink Floyd had the whole Wizard of Oz/Dark Side of the Moon thing, so I've got a good reason to vote for both of them. I gotta go with Talking Heads, though.

Barret is by no means a genius. From the limited material of his I've sampled, including stuff not on any album, it's sad to say but he's just a burnout. Sure, his music is creative and fun to listen to a lot of the time, but it is not terribly deep, imo. Now, philosophically, you could make the case that Roger is fairly shallow too, but it's just a rock band for chrissakes. I feel that Roger connects with me more than either Dave (blech) or Syd.

And you can't give all the credit to Syd, even for his psychadelic work, b/c there were many songs that Roger also worked on and coauthored. I won't vote b/c I don't know anything about the talking heads.

WELL, HOW DID I GET HERE?

I just saw two David Byrne shows. God the man can still put on a show, and his voice is still crystal clear and very powerful. Amazing stuff.

Talking Heads straddled commercial and critical success like no other band then broke up at the right time, Pink Floyd did, and then became a joke because they didn't know when to break up.

This Must Be The Place and Heaven beat Wish You Were Here in the shmaltz and sentiment stakes.

Psycho Killer was darker and more interesting than anything Pink Floyd ever turned out. And you could dance to it.

Actually, that's a good general delineation. Talking Heads songs are music you can analyse and geek out on, and dance to at the same time.

I agree wholeheartedly, Arwon.
