There is an extensive site at www.sws2b.dyndns.org:1124 for information about this.

As for the hack, I suggest a hack called "Sonic 2 Long Version" by "Sonic Hachelle-Bee." No links are provided since it is only available in BIN form; AFAIK.

Thanks for the correction. I think you're right actually...isn't there some sort of header on .smd files that actually makes them slightly bigger than .bin files?

Either way, though, you have to put it into the .bin format to easily be able to work with it.

Uh...no. SMD is merely an interleaved format used by some old copiers (Super Magic Drive?); AFAIK, the first half of the ROM contains the even bytes, and the second half contains the odd bytes. This can easily be mistaken for compression. Compare SMD and BIN filesizes sometime, and you'll find that they're not much different.

Well, I guess there was to be a 2nd act. If it had made it into the game it would of been only 1 act tho. But they ran out of time and reduced it to zero levels. here's a interview with one of the games creators. He talks about how the level got cut among other things. You will also find he states there was to be no master emarald. He mentions it twice actually.

It's worth noting that, for some reason, the patched ROM has a .bin extension, while the original is .smc I tried testing them, and they both worked fine, so hopefully that doesn't present a problem

Personally, I believe that the water was supposed to rise once you broke the emerald. Consider the following:

1. The water doesn't seem to serve any purpose in this level.
2. You can't go down the pipe.
3. The pipe abruptly ends a few screens down.
4. There's a near-vertical slope nearby that Sonic can't climb, littered with several sets of horizontally-placed Rings.
5. There's a stream of water moving along the ground at the top of the slope, but it has no effect on Sonic.

Think about it...Sonic breaks the emerald, jumps on a floating platform placed at the bottom of the slope, and rides it up the slope as the water rises. Once it reaches the top, it floats along the stream, like a log ride. It all makes sense.

Its not a master emerald. One of the games makers said in a interview that it's just a breakable object that you have to jump on to get inside the pipe below.Like those rocks that you have to break sometimes to get into pipes.

Yeah, the first level on the Beta is mostly functional. Neat tidbit that the Death Egg music plays when you get that upgrade. I remember discovering the Beta a few years ago and being outright thrilled. That, and the savestate that enabled debug mode in the Beta.

Too bad that level was never finished; it would have been interesting to see the Master Emerald that early on.

If you want to see Hidden Palace in all its original, straight-from-the-magazine-screenshots glory, just download the beta ROM.

No kidding. I loved the delta hacks. Get the one that attatches to the normal sonic game. Rather than the one that attatches to the beta game. That one is more complete.

Sounds like one of Esrael's "Delta" hacks. You can get them here, if you can get through the Spanish (Portuguese?). They've got some really interesting stuff in them; that guy's one of the best in the Sonic community.

I got something like this for my brother a while back (he's really into Sonic), but according to him, the levels aren't what would've been in the original game, had they not been removed. How he can say that when the version of the game with those zones in it never got released, I don't know, but I digress.

I made IPS patches of the two hacks I've got that are like what you're looking for. One's the normal game, but with the new levels added in, and in the other you can play as Knuckles instead of Sonic

You can get them from this link (it's a ~2Mb zip file), and see if they're what you're looking for.

Are there any Sonic 2 hacks that have Hidden Palace actually working? I've played the bugged up version by using a save state I picked up somewhere, but it was horrible. Is there a Sonic 2 hack that has a "cleaned up" version?
