Cool. Never thought of using the search feature. That's a good idea. I'll try that program when I get home. Also: It's probably closer to 10,000 folders.

I don't know of a program that would do that either, and although this suggestion wouldn't display the results in a tree sort of format, you could try it anyways.

Use the Search feature, and look for all files that are greater than a certain value. For example, in this case you'd be looking for all folders, but since there's no search that I know of that specifically finds folders, you'd search for all files, and just sort the results by type. The size can be whatever you want it to be, whether from something like 50Mb, to 5Gb

There's also programs you can download that search for empty folders, uneeded files, and the like, and delete them. The one I know of, which is SuperCleaner, can do that sort of stuff.

How many folders do you have that you want to sort out? The fact that you said you've got 50Gb you want to organize doesn't really help there, as you could have anywhere from 10 to 10000 different folders there

Either way, hopefully you can make use of either of those suggestions

Well, search SourceForge or something, I guess.

My concern though is that if you were to find something that displays a full tree of your computer, all folders, subfolders, etc laid out, it wouldn't be any easier to use that than it would be to do it the "hard way", simply due to the sheer amount of information you would then be presented with and the computer's limitation in displaying it all without problems. I just think it'll get very, very messy. I know doing it to my machine would.

Now, if you didn't want to display the whole tree, but rather have a modified version of Windows Explorer that displayed folder sizes, that might be easier to work with... but I still don't know of anything.

Hmm... the method you are describing would take hours. I have like 50 gigs of crap that I loaded on here when I was stupid. I've become better organised, but now I'm paying for my mistakes in the past...

Well, I can't think of anything, and chances are if you do get this raw data out of the machine, is it going to be in a format that you are going to be able to work through at any fast pace?? Anything that does what you describe is going to spit out huge, quite awkward amounts of data.

You're probably better to just use Windows Explorer. It will show you things in tree form, and you can always go to Properties, like I said. Besides, you will know better than any program what roughly you are looking for...

But I have a LOT of folders. I really want to clean up my computer to get it ready to back up for when I switch to Linux.

Um.... no. No idea at all, but I can only imagine that any tree of most people's folders, all laid out, would be horrible to try to work with anyways. (you do realise how many subfolders parts of Windows creates, right?)

You can always go to the Properties of a folder to see how much space each one is taking.

At any rate, Windows Explorer displays the tree, you want it though with all subfolders opened/visible and all space clearly marked? That i can't help with

I'm looking for a program that will scan your computer give you a tree of all your folders. Then beside it, it would tell you how much space each folder is taking up on your harddrive. You know: so if you're horribly disorganised like I am, you have hope of cleaning up your computer. If anyone knows of anything, I would be very greatful.
