Yes, I agree with Dr. Mario. That's the kind of hack I'm wanting. You know, I want a Mario hack thats just about mario. I know theres alot of graphic hacks but alot of them are either joke hacks, or they turn mario into someone else. One that updates his graphics such as the graphics show is what I want.

Wow thanks for the compliment on the Castlevania hack. Once I get some time away from school, you'll get the new levels and such. I promise.

On a SMB1 note... HOLY CRAP! The Screen Parasyte posted is freaking awesome, I mean it's just SMW/SMB2J graphics... which I'm sure I can do, but still... dag yo...

There's got to be a couple thousand graphic hacks of SMB1. Just most of them suck.

Super Mario Bros. 4 by Harmony7 is easily the best graphics-only Super Mario Bros. hack from 1998.

When I first saw this back in 1998, I was laughing for 10 minutes. Hacks like this is what got me into emulation.

Yeah, I've seen one called SMB DX, it uses graphics from the SMB3 game. I'll try and find it for you.
Ack, I just played that ROM hack recently at Trapster.

...I prefer the orginal graphics mot of the time, and I still do.

But that Sonic themed screenshot. XD

Back in the early days of ROM hacking, very few hacks even had basic hex editing done to them (the first Sonic the Hedgehog hacks were palettes only!). Pretty much all of my hacks up until Legend of the Blob Bros. 2 were graphics-only, but I poured my heart and soul (and an unholy amount of free time) into most of them and tried to make them as different from the original game as possible. When done right, a "simple graphics hack" can turn a tired game into a whole new experience.

Gah! How ironic, I didn't think of that.. *Points to name*

Anyways, it'd have to be more gray-ish, because a real-black Shadow would.. disappear in the underground, and castle levels.

Or maybe just a small bit of asm to remove the option to select 2 players.

Edit:

Actually, you could just color Player 2 black and call him shadow.

As in, changing Mario, Toad, etc..

Then again, you would have to do an assload of ASM if you didn't want a plain recolor of Sonic for the second character...

Well, Im more into playing Special edition of games that I have rather than all new levels and things. Thats why I bought the gba rereleases. Cause its the same game I know and love, just with extra features.

Plus I've always wanted to see how SMB1 looks with some SMB3 gfx isntead.

Yeah, I've definately seen these done before. They're allright, but I dunno... if you're going to do a GFX only hack, I think there should be a bit more effort put in it than just ripping the GFX from other games. If you really work at it, you can seriously make a GFX-Only hack have a specific feeling to it and it would be extremely effective. Besides, it would definately take SOME level editing to pull off a true SMB2 style graphics hack for SMB, because the ground would have to have 2 layers, grass and dirt. That would also limit the amount of items in the game... but actually that would completely solve a problem I was having when I was making a SMB hack...

I'm wondering if anyone has ever done a super mario 1 hack where they just change the graphics to Mario 2 or 3 without doing anythign else. Like adding new leevels or whatever. I'd like to retry these games with those style graphics.
