I wouldn't be surprised if the language select is still in the NTSC version, just disabled... Zelda: OoT has something similar; if you use the Gameshark code to switch the language to Japanese, it adds an alphabet selector (Hiragana/Katakana/Roman) to the name entry screen. (Some camera angles change too. )

Actualy, there are german and french fonts, in a way. Accented letters and the whole lot are still in the rom, so the text may very well be. *shrug*

Heh, I remember that the language select screen comes up when you have no savegames (I see it at startup as soon I clear all savegames, then restart my real PAL SNES.) Or when you press select at the intro. (I think it was select)

And sometimes the devolopment is international, maybe they added a language selection screen in the US version for the European translators or something. But it dosen't mean that the German and french text is in there.

Yep, and that's exactly why I'm wanting to solve this little mystery.

Yeah, it does. Does the U.S. version have the alternate icons as well?

I think the PAL version of Yoshi's Island has a language select.

I just happened to toy around with ycompress and TLP a little. One thing in the game that looks interesting is the different icons. I've seen a language select screen working on a real SNES, but have no clue on how to activate it. Is there a Game Genie code or anything?
