I don't know about the PR thing - this year was the best for baseball in recent memory, with close playoff races and the fans turning out in droves.
I think that they need to keep it under control before it becomes a huge fiasco that affects the fanbase though. |

MLB is suffering because of this union. The sport would be a little better off if every detail didn't go through them.
At least they aren't the NHL owners... 
It's definately a start, but doesn't go far enough yet. Here's my question, will the numbers overall go down for this season and the next few to follow?
but it's more a PR move than anything else.
Baseball needs all the good PR it can get right now. |

As mentioned before, it's an improvement, but it's probably not going to get much better than this.
What bugged me was Selig's yapping about "we're acting to restore confidence in our great game." Bullshit, Selig, you're acting because you didn't want the federal government getting involved in setting policies. Same goes for the union, who as you'll recall initially opposed testing of ANY kind.
In short, it's a start--and the humiliation of being found out will likely dispel most users--but it's more a PR move than anything else. |

What did Richard Pound say in the paper today... something along the lines of "Now you have to rob the liquor store 4 times before you go to jail."
It's an improvement but at the same time it's not strict enough - and I don't think it's ever going to get to that level unless you're willing to suspend dozens of players at once. |

I can't see him working with McCain. As much as it'd help him get his way, major sports leagues treasure autonomy. Why do you think NBA commish David Stern didn't want an arbitrator fiddling with the suspensions he handed out for the brawl?
Either way, it's refreshing to see a steroid policy with some teeth. Maybe not a full set, but you've gotta go through baby teeth, right? It's kind of foolish to expect them to have something like the NFL's policy. In terms of power and influence:
MLBPA > all
potted plant > NFLPA
There's just no way they'd get anything like THAT through (test positive once, get the hook for a quarter of the season). Just too much power. (Then again, people DID say we wouldn't see a meaningful policy in baseball due to the union, but the clean players got sick of a few bad apples and pushed for it.) |

Testing posivite results in these penalties:
1st: up to 10 game suspension
2nd: 30 game suspension
3rd: 60 game suspension
4th: 1 year
All of these are without pay.
5th: you are at the mercy of Bud Selig
Testing posivite means that the name is released to the public for all to know and see (and ridicule if necessary).
New substances were added to the ban list, but no stimulants were. This new policy takes effect immediately (unless I'm reading it wrong). The deal runs until 2008.
This whole issue was brought up for two reasons:
1. Grand jury testimony was leaked, Jason Giambi reports to using steroids.
2. Barry Bonds testifies he unknowingly used steroids.
Senator John McCain said that if a new much stronger policy was not in place by January, he would introduce legislature to Congress to make a policy for MLB.
Here's my question, if Bud Selig wanted a zero tolerance (as he has stated) why didn't he just accept anything but? He could've given the specifics to McCain, and it could've gone through as such. Something I'm missing?
