Was Snatcher that underrated in Japan though? I thought it saw quite a few ports/editions for various systems both in the past and now.

Popular games that could never grow on me? Well, damn. This one crosses my mind almost instantly: GoldenEye (N64). I don't care what anyone else says. It's quite possibly the most over-rated game ever. Sure it's been fun, but the problem with that is: there's just no replay value, or anything to keep me occupied and want to play this game any further. And that is the case with a lot of N64 games, sadly.

Popular Games I Dislike:

Halo 1 and 2
Final Fantasy 7, 10, and 11
GTA Series (I'll admit though, San Andreas was amusing for awhile...)

Unpopular Games I Like:

Toejam & Earl
Earthworm Jim Series
Castlevania N64 Series
System Shock 2
Out of this World & Heart of the Alien (even though HOTA was hard as hell :p)
Oddworld Series
...and the greatest underdog of them all...

SNATCHER!!!!

This one was the only one that was even close to decent. It wasn't a good game by any means, but it has a decent soundtrack and is quite fun.

It was one of several experiments by Midway to try and freshen up the MK license.

None of them came close to working.

You know what game I like but no one else does?

MK Mythologies

Maybe it is because all of those drugs have actually killed my brain activity, but either way. I liked Sub-Zero's game play.

I've never tried any MMORPG's, but I just know that they wouldn't be my thing. I have to be able to play games for short amounts of time and put them down when I want to. Rando likes to play FFXI, and sometimes he gets stuck because he'll be partying with people and everyone has to help everyone else level up or get the item they need or whatever. That's fair and understandable, but it also means that you're committed to a significant block of time.

A bunch of our friends are on FFXI and all play together, and it's fun to sit by the computer and read the chat, but I wouldn't want to get into the game just for that. I just have Rando say hi to everybody for me.

I remeber this thread!! I started one like this when I was Johnbadia
ahhh the memories

Anyways, I don't really like -any- MMORPG.

I tried WoW today, and I guess it was ok. It just seems like a lot of it was mundane. Granted, I was on the lower levels, but it just didn't entice me to play more.

You STILL have to love googly-eyed Kuros at the start of the game though.

I found that the Diamond Sword helped. I think I got the hang of knowing exactly how to hit enemies. *shrug* Yes, the Ironsword was lovely, but...

It WAS useless. I think the Diamond Sword didn't help much either. Once I got the Ironsword, I was happy, but still, YEEARGH. It seemed like much of your equipment was there just to look nice.

You COULD jump into enemies although I usually avoid them most of the time.

Thankfully you can get the Diamond Sword in the Forest part of the Water level, which is REALLY big and takes care of the problems that might be caused by your wimpy little sword.

I never got to play the first Wizards and Warriors, but I always wanted to. Ironsword looked so cool in Nintendo Power, but then I rented it and got annoyed pretty quickly because, as I recall, the sword was pretty much useless and you had to somehow jump into enemies to kill them. I remember that I at least got to the cloud level, though. Maybe I ought to give it another shot.

I never had a problem with the second game - the fact I could finish it from start to finish without resorting to passwords says so.

I know which enemies you're talking about... the little blue devils. That was one of the few "WTF" moments I saw in the game. One time they'll take one bit off your life meter, the next they'll take off six parts of it. Sometimes they'd kill you completely if you got juggled.

(One fun thing to do - get juggled by the final boss. You can go REALLY high in the air if you time it right, although you'll be dead before you hit the ground. )

There are a lot of people who are all too ready to disown the revolutionary games that belong to their series (FFVII, OoT).

I thought the Zelda game everyone wanted to disown was Zelda 2...

As for me, I'm not sure how much people were creaming themselves over THUG2, but it just seemed like a bit of a letdown. It'd be nice if you could pick teams, although
Spoiler:
the sight of Eric Sparrow with his head jammed up the bootlegger's ass
makes it worthwhile. That and the revival of Classic Mode made it worth $25, not the standard issue $50. And I'm not so big on NFL Street, but maybe I just suck at football games.

Goldeneye. WTF is so great about it? It's just another FPS, but with crappy graphics and annoyingly long death scenes.

(gets HH friends and a 30-pack)

Get back to me in a couple of weeks.

Colin: Wizards and Warriors... the first is electronic crack, second was a total letdown (how the hell does one enemy alternately murdalize you and do almost nothing?), third was a tad confusing but adequate.

Here's another highly rated game that I liked for a while and just couldn't pick back up. It's especially surprising because I was super duper hyped for its release.

Dark Cloud 2

The original Dark Cloud got mixed reviews, but I absolutely loved it. I didn't mind the parts that many people found boring and tedious. When I heard about the sequel, I was all excited, even before it came out and started getting high ratings across the board. We got it and I played it for a while, but something just wasn't right. Dark Cloud was crack...Dark Cloud 2 didn't have the same effect.

The basic gameplay is pretty similar. In both games, you go around randomly generated dungeons floor by floor to collect materials that you use to reconstruct towns. You can play as multiple characters and switch on the fly (though sometimes the game limits you to one character for a specific floor). Using weapons gets them experience that you can use to absorb items into them to increase different attributes. When you raise attributes enough, you can evolve the weapon into a better one. Weapons also have hit points, and you have to fix them with repair powder when they get weak.

So what's the problem? Certain core gameplay aspects were tweaked enough that they got on my nerves after a while.

World building

In the original Dark Cloud, you looked for specific pieces of towns: houses, people, trees, rivers. Putting the town back together felt like assembling a puzzle. In Dark Cloud 2, you gather sets of instructions for making houses, trees, etc. out of raw materials, and you have to collect people from your hometown to populate the settlements with. This is a more flexible setup that has its merits, but I didn't find it as enjoyable and satisfying as putting Humpty back together again, especially because some of the people are a pain in the ass to recruit and you need specific ones to put in certain places. For instance, you have to win a footrace to get the sheriff. I didn't actually get that far, but I saw Rando do this about a bazillion times before he finally got it, and it didn't seem to be my idea of fun. In contrast, I loved looking for pieces in the dungeons because it would generally take a few floors for you to collect enough to finish a certain building, so I'd be curious about what parts I was going to find next and excited to finally get that last one I needed.

Collecting underpants^Wgood stuff

As you may gather, upgrading weapons is a very important aspect of gameplay. To upgrade most efficiently, you need to use attachments that give you large stat bonuses. These are, of course, difficult to come by in both games, but the mechanisms by which you find them are quite different. The dungeons in Dark Cloud feature backfloors: somewhat secret areas with more challenging enemies and more valuable treasure. Backfloor entrances appear frequently, but you need a certain item to use them, and that item is generally a rare treasure from the dungeon. (There's one dungeon with purchasable backfloor keys, but even if that weren't available, I would still prefer this game's item hunting. Anyway...) You're not guaranteed to find good attachments in a backfloor, but you usually get at least one.

Dark Cloud 2 requires that you play Spheda, a golfing minigame that is available once you clear a dungeon floor. This would be fun if its difficulty didn't vary widely each time, if you didn't have to kill all the enemies every time you wanted to play, and if you could get more than one good treasure per floor. As it stands, it may take you a while to get a reasonably winnable Spheda setup, and once you get the good treasure on a particular dungeon floor, poof - that's it. You can still play, but you'll get a crappy treasure if you win. This makes good item hunting a much more tedious and unreliable process.

In all fairness...

Dark Cloud 2 is not without its improvements. For example, when a weapon's HP reaches zero, it just becomes useless. In the original game, weapons just broke and were lost forever. I never had a problem with that because I saved often and always had auto-repair powder equipped, but it was still bad game design, and I was happy to see it fixed. I just wish the dungeon crawling experience would have remained as addictive as it was in the first game.

Bomberman 64 was awesome ...

Sad thing is, everyone told me "omg dude Bomberman Hero pwns it!", so I played it, and I was very sad.

Bomberman 64 was way better. Awesome multiplayer too.

Another one I remember, Red Faction. That game in my opinion is still to this day one of my favorite FPS's ... great music, story, setting; it was like Total Recall in an FPS.

Then, kind of like the Bomberman 64 sequel incident, Red Faction II easily remains as the worst pile of shit FPS I have ever played in my life; in my opinion.

I'd say you'd be right for calling Super Robot Wars in the States, Val... but say that statement in Japan and you'd get your ass kicked.
