It's pretty sad considering I can easily bust out my SNES and Genesis to this day and play them with no problem.

And for those of you who are about to correct me with some epic about the majority of the problem being related to disc games instead of cartridges, just keep it to yourself. Thank you.

I have an idea though. Buy a new PS2, switch units, then return it.
Hrmm, they do scan the serial number of the PS2 when they sell it, although they might not notice that when you bring it back. It'd be easier to do that with a used one, though.

You can switch the serial stickers by carefully removing them with a razor blade... at least, this worked on my GameCube a few years ago (when due to my own error it dropped off a table and stopped recognizing the fourth controller). The employees at Wal-Mart weren't paying much attention, though - not only did they miss the visible dents on the front of the GC, but they didn't notice I had taken the new official controller and replaced it with a cheap third-party which looked completely different.

Have a similar problem as you, my Cube recognises the 4th controller, but analogsticks go nuts, or with Bongos, no clapping. (Wavebird doesn't even work). But I can still use a Hori-pad on it.

Bad that my Cube is allmost 3 years old. (and where to get a NTSC-Cube in europe ^^)

But that's my only problem with Nintendo related Hardware (My SP was trown more meters than a Nintendo can survive, and it still worked, somehow.)

I've nearly broken games, from accidentally placing them in the disc tray but not knowing they weren't in fully ... closing the disc up agains't the closing of the disc tray.

Funny fact, apparently the PS2 has 3 different lens. (maybe 4) One for each different type of disc, PS1 CDrom games, DVD's, and PSX games. I read an article (think it was Game Informer) where apparently the "switch" that shifted these lens when different discs were placed in the PS2 broke on someone. So, the guy had to basically set a manual shift / switch so he could rotate the lens itself.

The Xbox has one, from what I've read. That's dual layered or something, for Xbox games, and DVD's.

Nothing to really do with what I'm argueing with, but just seems like a lack of product here.

I've had Sony reps tell me that using it sideways, stand or not, puts your system at risk. Which makes selling the sideways stand a tad ironic. "Pay $20 to ruin your games!"

Actually the black ones were refitted too, any PS2 with a built in IR reciever has an upgraded laser inside. And in theory, you shouldn't have problems with an upright machine if you use a stand. Its 'supposed' hold the Cd in place.

Haha, this is why I love Nintendo. The other day, (I dunno what to call the guy, he lives here but isn't related or married or anything) was trying to play a DVD on his PS2 and it simply wouldn't read anything. We had to bring out mine (not used very often ). My brother also has a friend who often brings his Xbox over. So manu times, I've been watching him play it and it would just freeze up randomly, or files would get erased, etc.

Guess how many times, to date, My Gamecube has ever had a problem (besides controllers being crap)? ZERO.

It's not the trays. It's the laser componant of the original black PS2s. They gradually degrade every time you play blue-disk CD-ROMs, as you'll notice that when you start playing across formats it'll get worse.

This was fixed with the new fancy coloured PS2s, so if you buy a new silver or blue one they should be fine.

However, it still hasn't been fixed with any subsequent black ones, they're still the old types.
The solution is; if it's in warrenty, bug Sony for a fix. If it's not, buy a new one.

I'm not too sure about the slimline models. Mine had trouble playing a DVD upright the other day and this definately seems the case on the old versions as well.

Heh, I only did set my Gamecube upside down for inserting Gameboy player into the thing.

But that it can take that during play, maybe I shouldn't handle the cube as it would explode on contact.

I always play the ps2 flat down...but I think sony is pretty bad at keeping things working for a long period of time...
I know my ps1, after i had it for like 3 years, we needed to put it upside down for it to read disc's, it was strange.

Same thing happened with my PSX and PS2 .My old PSX constantly fired DRE messages at me not too long after the warranty expired. Now recently the same thing is going on with my PS2 and it's seriously pissing me off. It is almost as if Sony made it do this on purpose.

I'll take the guess that the reason your Gamecube would work properly that way was because it held the game disc in place. Sounds stupid, but think about it. When you try to take a game out of the Gamecube, it actually have to pull a bit on it, because it's held in place by the small metal balls. I don't own a PS2, but I have played games on one somewhere else, and when you're taking a game out there, it's just a lift it out and be on your way thing.

Now, I've got barely any knowledge of what the insides of the PS2 are like, but I assume the CD tray's pretty much like something you'd find on a computer. It makes sense for any game to run fine while the PS2's on it's side, because the CD's sitting flat on the thing that holds it in. I wonder if turning it up on it's end would cause the CD to slide off the holder thing a bit

I too have turned my Gamecube upside down, on it's side (only for a short period of time there), held it up facedown by the handle, while I was playing a game, and I didn't have any problems. The only time things have gone wrong for me was when I kept opening the lid while the game was trying to load

Wow. That's quite long for such a simple expanation

As for the thread topic, the only thing I can think of that would cause that is a dirty lens It's too bad your Dad won't let you try to fix it, but you could try what was suggested in the second post. Have a friend bring their PS2 over for 'repairs' and 'fix' it Only, I wouldn't advise that unless you really know what you're doing.

It's due to the disc tray the PS2 has. You'll notice that the disc isn't held firmly in place, but rather sets in the tray. That's fine... as long as the system isn't sideways, where the disc can tilt over, becoming closer to the laser than designed, burning the game.

It is true. Playing games while the PS2 is vertical can lead to damaged discs.

I also heard that the earlier PS2's had glitches with DRE. I got mine a year after they came out and its never failed me. Some of my friends' PS2's have been messed up tho (and they got them when they first came out). Also I heard the PS2 works better flat down and not vertically...dont know if thats true tho.

Heh, consider that it's just a 32 mb game. And that it apparantly loads the whole game into the RAM. Or at least, that's what I heard.

The only disc I gotten some problems with was Civ2, and only with the music tracks. Thought, that's a PC game but well...

Well, I think there -are- ways to fix this problem. There should be some stuff online about how to do it.

I've had this problem with an xbox, but never a PS2.
