After watching those 500 screenshots, I finally played the hack today.

The original Castlevania is a hell of a good game, but it's GFX are strange... Strange combination of colors, strange positions for the background tiles, "strange" this, "strange" that... Sooner or later, someone had to do the job of making CV1 look good - and Dr.Mario did it.

The main character really looks like the one from the second Playstation CV game. I know how hard is to make a job like this, so here I am sayin' "congratulations" to Doc Mario again.

The backgrounds are the most attractive change of the hack. Everything looks elegant and correctly placed. It's a big relief to play Castlevania with beautiful, discrete and organized tiles everywhere.

ROM hacks are good because you can make absolutely anything without concern about sales, censorship, good reception of the public, etc.etc. Dr. Mario chose to make a very very dark visual modification - if it was an "official" game released in the 80's maybe it could be way too scary for the kids. But, as I said, this is his vision and I liked it a lot.

My only suggestion is: Please, make a version for the japanese cartridge game. It has an "easy mode" and only playing it on easy I can see the game till the end. Castlevania is very hard to me even today and I - and a lot of bad players - would love to see your entire modification project.

Once again, congratulations!

P.S.: To the people with lots of Castlevania versions, patch the game in the PRG1 ROM.

Yeah, also juste is outlined in Castlevania HOD: But its pretty much the outline of the whole body. Not just part.

And again, I ain't being unappreciative. I like the hack.

In Castlevania it's common that black things have a red outline so they will stand out from the background, if you download the hack you'll see that bats and the panthers both have a red outline to them.

I understood why the boots were like that. It just looks unusual to have the boots outlined like that considering everything else is outlined in black.

It's still a great looking hack tho.

Hey, at least SOMEONE understands why I had to do that. That and I was trying to make him look like an NES version of the Castlevania Chronicles Simon, and without even looking at anything, I think I did a pretty decent job.

There's nothing wrong with the character's feet... His boots are black, the background is black. You need a way to identify those different elements...

The outline is odd, but we are talking about the NES, a console well-known by it's few few colors - and odd solutions are sometimes necessary.

Konami itself used the outline in the first Castlevania in the bats.. Nintendo used it on Super Mario 3's ghosts. And probably other NES artists used that in the past.

"GFX-only" hacks are always destroyed by the critics and that's not fair. Dr. Mario did a wonderful job and the outline is just a demonstration of his ability to avoid problems with the always challenging NES palette.

Looks great. the feet seem a bit odd, but the darker theme fits castlvania perfectly.

This hack looks pretty good. Although that red outline makes his feet look inverted.

Perhaps just making the souls of his feet red? Either way I like this hack.

Yeah, but I wanted him to have black boots, and with the darker levels, you wouldn't be able to see his feet without the red.

Looking pretty darned good, although the red outline around the boots looks a little unnatural...

I'm done with my CV GFX hack, and before you say "So what? all you did was GFX" trust me, there was a ton of level editing that went into getting these GFX to work.
I didn't feel right just releasing a GFX only hack, so I decided to hop on photoshop and make something special. Along with the patch is a 13 page instruction booklet! So enjoy all the fun stuff, and don't forget to read the README!.txt file

For those that haven't seen the previous post, here's some screens:

Also I know this isn't PERFECT. I know of at least 2 rough spots involving stairs.
