That's not Zelda II, though. Majora's Mask is Zelda VI. And it's not the first one not to take place in Hyrule, either, Link's Awakening is.

Well it could be worse. Look at Devil May Cry 2. You want people making sequels like it?

That's because back in the day, they actually experimented to try to make cool stuff. Now it's all cookie-cutter sequels. </bitter>

hmm.. the trend is looking like it is older games that are affected by the '2' syndrome while modern games not so much.

The only one I can think of right now is Star Tropics 2. It's quite a bit different than the first one, in that you can move freely (you moved a set amount with each button press on the first one), the tunnel rooms can have more than one 'floor', and the addition of the different swords and things as weapons, when on the first one you only had a yoyo, which could be upgraded to a ball and chain or a supernova, then all the alternate weapons.

Ratchet and Clank, as well. If anything, the first game in that series was the black sheep. All the weird features from the second game stayed on in the third, but the first had a different control system, different weapons system, heck it even had a slightly different graphical style.

Yeah, FF2 was radically different from all other Final Fantasy games in how characters developed, where the others all used an EXP point system to my knowledge. So in that respect, I think it counts.

However, as there's no timeline for the FF games, you could easily make a case for any of them being distinct.

Emptyeye: Wonder Boy = Adventure Island. At least the first installment. Hudson pretty much split the series and had Adventure Island follow the same style of gameplay while playing around with the Wonder Boy series and making it more fantasy-like.

I'm not sure it can count... basically none of the games (not counting FF10 -> FF10-2) are connected in any way. Although I suppose FF2j does count, as it did have the whole gain-experience-according-to-your-actions system.

that's screwed up. that was THE coolest feature and now you cant legitimately get your own espeon and umbreon from an evee (well you CAN but you wont know what one it is). the date thing was so cool. certain events like stores opened on certain days, etc...that made it fun and inovative. now its like "SET THE CLOCK SO YOUR BERRIES CAN BE RETARDED AND THE WATER GOES UP WHEN IT BLOODY WELL FEELS LIKE IT". and Hoothoot and Noctowl are no more. i'm so depressed

And people don't like being unable to catch them during the day. I don't see what's so hard to understand

And to answer your question, I read it in Nintendo Power awhile back. Not certain exactly what issue.

But it followed the same basic formula. The reason those aren't in other things is because the majority of people polled found it very inconvenient.

Pokemon Gold and Silver. Second installment, FAR different from any of the others by so many ways (it kept track of the day of the week, and even had day and night corresponding with your own time. none of the other games have yet to do this)

SSX, DOOM, Grand Theft Auto, etc.
Phantasy Star 3 too, but they went back to the old style for 4

Toejam & Earl 2 was also quite different from the first, but I'm not sure if there ever was a third one ...
I think they just came out with one a little while ago for XBox. I never played any but the first, though.

That was 2.

Adventure Island actually spawned from some completely unrelated Sega series (Whose first game was the same)...I wanna say the Wonderboy series. O.o

Is Final Fantasy not a series? It went from NES->SNES->PSX->PS2.

D'oh!
toooootally spaced on that series!

okay, the phrase "once a series makes it to a new system, it tends to become a new series" is not valid at all. So long and good riddance to it.

Donkey Kong jr was the the only one of the three to have the goal of saving DK as opposed to stopping him. Hmm, DKC2 had the same theme. Hmm... i never played DKC3.
And didn't Adventure island 2 first get the dinosaurs, or was that AI3?
