NO.

I can't put it any better than Toastyfrog can. Just simply NO.

In no particular order:

Final Fantasy Tactics (may not count, but... whatever. Kickass!)
Chrono Trigger. (Hands down. Magus, please father my children. So they float.)
Xenogears. (also hands down. Best plot in an RPG, period.)

There is only one RPG the greatest of all, Final Fantasy VI. (III US)

The best RPG's are pretty much everything in the Final Fantasy series (and pretty much everything else produced by Squaresoft for that matter). But in particular, FF2 and FF3. These are the two games that really got me into RPG's, and they are classics.

I put it as my best, because for a while it was one of the most impressive. For its time, it was really well done, the simple 3D polygon battle system, the nice soundtrack...but yeah, better ones have come along, but for some reason I still enjoy it.

You know theres somthing wrong with the sequal when the 1st dungeon takes longer than Venus Lighthouse to complete

Shame on me for forgetting Mario RPG for Snes, it was the very fist RPG I ever played. I've beaten it countless times too and it's still a great and fun game. Just wish you could go past level 32.

I think the second game might have turned off anyone who really liked the series, as it didn't quite live up to the first one quite well...I'm still waiting for the third installment, unless they want to ignore the fact that it was supposed to be a trilogy though, it does look like it kinda just ended after The Lost Age...time will tell, I guess.

You're right, the second one wasn't as good as the first. I played through about half the game then I just started to get sick of it and bored so I quit.

Golden Sun 1 was good though, but I wouldn't put it as my best RPG game ever played

I like Golden Sun, but it's not the absolute best RPG I've ever played.

The Mario RPG and Breath of Fire series should be added to anyone's list.

Story and characterwise: FF 6 and 7
Gameplaywise: Grandia II, I just never got tired of playing. And Bahamut Lagoon; not yet finished though.
Atmosphere: Shadow Hearts, towards the end it scared the hell out of me. Its really creepy.

Oooooh! If we're talking about on-line RPGs, someone shoulda said

I'm totally digging (well, did) the RO...As well as the D2 (I say it counts, so it does).

Since we're counting FFT, I'm going to drag Ogre Battle (Tactics Ogre) into this. Because that game rocks.

Well, I guess my fav TRUE RPG would be Dungeons and Dragons, still. My fav "modern-style" RPG is Final Fantasy VI, followed by (in no particular order) FF Tactics (which is a good strategy game too), Chrono Trigger, Seiken Densetsu 3 (that's NOT a pushover, wite, you should try it), and Everquest.

That is true, but it also allows the novice RPGer to get a grasp on the sheer scope of some games.

There's been plenty of ports of PC-style games. Wizardry and Might and Magic for the NES are two examples.

Open-ended, yeah... but for the novice player they might be too much since there's no linear path.

FFT, KOTOR, Morrowind, anything...ANYTHING by Bioware is the best.

Sorry, but I believe Morrowind was primarily developed by Bethseda.

Colin, Morrowind would be a "PC RPG" for the Xbox, which doesn't quite make sense

I prefer to call them "Open-ended RPGs".

I am aware, and FFT is Square. I meant to say that ANYTHING made by Bioware kick ass...I just got lazy and edited my post.

To add to this list, I'd have to say that I really do enjoy Xenosage and Xenogears, as well as Vagrant Story.

Random battles with funky battle systems and the like?

I don't know.
