To add something to DarkSlaya's suggestion, there're three spyware programs I use on my computer
Ad-Aware SE Personal Spybot: Search & Destroy Giant AntiSpyware
Interestingly enough, none of those programs detect all the spyware that manages to get installed on the computer. Each program finds it's own share; Ad-Aware finds stuff in both the registry and on the hard drive. Spybot mostly finds stuff in the registry, but it's said to block most of this stuff from getting on your computer in the first place. Giant AntiSpyware likes to pick on the passport.com cookie that gets created when I log into hotmail, and it also detects some 'StartNow Hyperbar' at least once a day. The latter may be because I use a P2P program. |

And always keep track of spywares. Because: Faster connection equals faster downloads (and more of them) and more downloads = spywares. |

Pretty much what's been said, as long as you know you have a firewall running and working with anti-virus on the side you should be fine. If you don't have it, you're going to be in way more trouble than you would with a dinky 56K. |

and also, remember its always connected, so its usually not wise to disable any firewall when you get off the computer..but you should know your always connected anyways...but just saying just incase. |

Make sure you're not already behind an existing firewall, such as one for your building complex or neighborhood. I just use the windows firewall from sp2, I think it's good enough, if something new needs to connect and get info from outside the firewall always ask if I want to unblock or block the program. Other than that I use AVG anti virus. I don't think you should need more than that and some common sense. |

Pretty much what the title implies....running WinXP Service Pack 2, what settings and the like should I have to make sure no bad bad people try and get into my computer(s)? Any special firewalls I should grab, or is the Windows one good enough?
And so on. |
