I recommend to create a slipstreamed Windows XP installation disc with all the SP2 files included. It takes some time, but I think after a fresh install it causes less problems than installing SP2 on an older XP installation.
I got that computer four weeks ago - The Windows XP install CD included Service Pack 1a - I simply installed SP2 offline from another CD immediately after XP installation and never experienced any problem later.
Edit: Created my slipstreamed disc now. With file checking after the burning process in Nero 6 and the integration of SP2 into Win XP install root directory, it took maybe 15 minutes - no long time -> part stroke out above  |

Those parathesis are in the Windows 2000 sentence. Windows 2000 has already had four service packs, thus the next one for it will be SP5. Windows XP isn't the only OS with service packs. |

Geez, it's just a service pack. I'd install it... 
It does seem as though everyone's talking about XP SP2, though. It may be because XP is the first (or second, if you count MS' 2000 campaign) NT for home PCs. But I don't remember them screaming about SP1. Or 2000 SP4 (though I know quite a few people anxious for SP5 in May). |

I installed SP2 on one of my computers and formatted the same day. It's just not worth it at ALL.

Or just download the full installation (usually labelled "Network Install" at Microsoft's site) and integrate it with your CD-ROM's i386 directory. Then burn a new bootable disc with that. |

/me's computer currently run with WinXP SP2
The best way to actually have SP2 work well, is to install it after a fresh install, or even better... having a WinXP installation CD with SP2 install on it (like mine). |

Ok, yea, I used System Restore and did those things you told me to do, Pegasus. Next time, when the computer restarts(which it did before SP 2), I'll tell you what it says. |

Right Click My Computer icon and go to Properties > Advanced "Tab" > Startup & Recovery, and uncheck the checkbox "Automatically Restart". The next time something happens, your computer won't restart automatically, but instead it will get a BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death), take note of what it says after you get BSOD as you'll need the info to identify your problem (ex. PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGE_AREA). After that, post the info here that the BSOD reports to you, we'll continue to help you from there.

Hmm. The only thing I could think of in your case is to find some way to get back to SP1. I upgraded to SP2 back when the Windows Update thing got on my final nerve  (some time in September), and I can't say anything's gone wrong with my computer since.
512Mb of RAM should be more than enough for XP. I've got the same amount, although I'm not exactly sure what type it is (Belarc says it's installed in 'DDR Slot 1' though).
I'd recommend using a System Restore point to see if you can go back to SP1 without having to format your hard drive or anything.
To get into System Restore, go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore. It should save all the files you've created (like word files and whatnot), but it will basically uninstall any new software that's been installed after the last Restore Point was made.

Actually, now that I think of it, have you tried booting up your computer in Safe Mode? I think you've just got to keep pressing F8 after you turn your computer on, then choose 'Safe Mode' from the list. If your computer doesn't reboot repeatedly there, then it should be pretty safe to assume it's something wrong with SP2.
If that doesn't work, you could try running a repair install on XP. I'm assuming that'll put it back down to SP1, but I don't know if it'll do anything to whatever files you've made on the computer. |

Yesterday, I installed service pack 2 onto my computer. Then, I restarted it as directed. HOWEVER, the computer RESTARTED BEFORE I TOLD IT TO. Anyway, I went on and logged on after it rebooted and after ten or so minutes, it restarted again. And again. And again. I turned off the computer last night, thinking that a proper rest was all it needed. It seemed I was wrong because when I turned it on, it restarted once or maybe multiple times.(I didn't check until an hour later) My computer doesn't regularly restart, unless I leave it on for too long.(It says that the memory is insufficient - 512 SDRAM) This is really a problem for me, and how can I fix this? Will I need to turn back the settings to those of Service Pack 1? |
