I'm tired of us IRC regulars of being seen as hard asses who won't help anyone out, so, I plan to change that. Here is the data you seek.

Super Mario Leg Tiles:

0x6EF5 = Mario's "back" foot tile (facing away from his direction)
0x6EF6 = Mario's "front" foot tile (facing in his direction)

0x6E7D = Mario's "back" foot tile when crouching (facing away from his direction)
0x6E7E = Mario's "front" foot tile when crouching (facing in his direction)

Small Mario Leg Tiles:

0X6EE5 = Mario's "back" foot tile when small (facing away from his direction)
0x6EE6 = Mario's "front" foot tile when small (facing in his direction)

These are the exact tile #s found in the pattern tables used for Mario's leg tiles when standing still. What you want to do, is change one of his leg tiles and leave the other the same. You'll have to over write the use of another tile, unfortunately, since there is no free tile space for sprites. For the new tiles you create, remember the tile # and replace it for one of his legs as above. If it appears backwards, just flip your tile in your tile editor and things should look fine.

Hope this helps.

Dan I wouldn't want to be around people like that, I'll keep away from IRC if it's like that. Thanks for the info.

MathOnNapkins I would feel like I'm in a ghost town if no one was to say anything.

I any channel I've been in, nobody ever says anything. If you ask a question it is pretty much ignored unless someone has an answer. Tough questions are usually the ones you have to answer yourself, unfortnately.

I believe Inverse's Scene Chapter in his ROM Hacker's Newbie FAQ document sums up my thoughts about IRC channels. Especially this part:

1201: What is "The Scene"?

"The Scene" (which you'll often see written in bold) refers to a
large subset of ROM hackers who communicate via IRC and various
messageboards. "The Scene" is like a family. A fat, lazy, annoying
family of assholes, most of whom hate each other.

If you take my advice, you'll avoid the ROM hacking IRC channels altogether.

The bullcrap quota is indeed quite high, but it's still relatively easy to find info there, as long as you ask nicely and don't piss off any ops. Nevertheless, they are dangerous waters, so take precautions

YOu can probably get good results by asking people on IRC (many of the more knowledgable hackers hang out there on a regular basis) You can try #rom-hacking on the Esper network or #acmlm on forget-it.net

Unfortunately, your chance of actually getting useful information out of people on IRC is very low, due to the high bullshit quota.

I read a few rumors about IRC, what kinda high bullshit quota do they look for?

I don't want to bother him, he looks too important to be bothered with anyone, but thanks anyway Googie.

MathOnNapkins I know how to use a hex editor, I use Hexecute Win. I also have Tile Layer Pro to open the ROM to edit the graphics.

*EDIT* I played with my smb hack exactly how Acmlm did his strange Mario hack. it looks all distorted but I place the sprites like Acmlm's hack. How do I change it in hex?

Like MathOnNapkins said, you can reach a few people that did hacks like that. You can ask Acmlm, he did it in his SMB1 hack Strange Mario Bros. But I can't promise you that he'll answer right away or answer at all. PM him if you get a chance.

You are going to want to seek out the people who have already done hacks like that. In general I think at least a few have already done that sort of hack, and it's pretty silly imo to just do what others have done, except maybe for educational purposes. But don't be surprised if people don't want to spend all day talking to you about how to do X hack b/c in general they are not there to teach you. Many interesting hacks require a knowledge of assembly language, but there are proably just as many or more that don't, which you can do with hex editing or with existing programs/editors.

Do you know how to hex edit? If you don't that should be your first task. It's a fundamental that you really can't get around.

WOW! Thanks Waluigi for saying that Waluigi's Adventure is your favorite SMB1 hack! I really appreciate that. I'm glad that you enjoy my hack.

Hello, I've been watching all of these cool hacks since May so I decided to take up ROM hacking for myself. I know the basics on editing text, Graphics, & levels for various editors, moslty the SMB series. My favorite hack is Waluigi's Adventure. Well my question is, in Super Mario Bros. how does one make Mario stand when he is small, big & when Mario ducks down like in Super Mario Bros. 3? Are there any documents where I can learn to do this for SMB1? I went to Zophar's Domain & I went to the Rom Hacking Repository to see if they had a document, but no such luck.

Thank you for any advice given.
