I knew of him too, but I'm too young to remember him on radio. I liked his voice and how calm he was, but I never realised how important he was to the music industry and radio as a whole. I watched a little segment on him on a news channel which said he never talked over the music that was playing because he respected the music and respected the people that wanted to listen to the music so much. I think a lot of DJs can learn from that, even though its quite a simple idea, to respect the music.

They have mentioned him on passing on some of the more avant garde CBC news serials on the World News segment of the network. Of course, I actually knew who he was because my father wants to suck him off. I'm going to assume that my dad is going to be crushed when he hears this.

Yeah, that news shocked me when I heard it...It was just so unexpected. I was just watching him on a repeat of Grumpy Old Men the other day on BBC2, and I wouldnt have ever expected that to happen. Used to listen to his Radio One slot too when I could. RIP John.

Very sad. New music lost a saint in the industry yesterday.
He had a voice that was simply so easy to listen to. I was going to make a thread myself, but I didn't expect many people to know who he was. Good to know there's three of us

I used to listen to his show every night on my way home from work. He was excellent to listen to and his taste in music was so eclectic he made me look small minded. He introduced me to "Seven nation Army"

Damn near legendary BBC Radio personality John Peel was found dead while on vacation in Peru yesterday. During his 40-year career, the list of bands that he broke would be FREAKING HUGE. Let's just say to start with the Velvet Underground and go on from there.
