Bullshit. The only thing that's gotten worse is the audience, and developers are having to pander to them.

We've been in that phase since at least the PS1.

I'm happy if they keep making retro-style games every once in a while, so I'm glad they're making a sidescrolling Mario game for the DS. Mario vs. Donkey Kong was cool too, but not my type of game.

Similarly: Ikaruga kicks ass. Also, I may get an xbox for metal slug 3, if I heard correctly that that's on there.

I agree with you Nebetsu to an extent, but I still think great and high quality games are still coming out these days. Half-Life 2, Halo 2, Metroid Prime 2, and many other games.

I think the reason why most of us will always believe and claim the NES/SNES/Genesis systems to be our favorite, is simply because that's what we grew up with as a child and where so many of our fond memories are kept, like Finneram said. So there's really no way to change that.

The biggest issue here is innovation. Now that videogames have become and are known for it's blockbuster hits, there are so many more companies out there than there were only 10 years ago, and there are so many craptacular games being made because "Its already been done", or something. Back in the day making a plumber double in size when he picked up a mushroom, making an android character morph into a ball and lay bombs, making a hedgehog who runs insanely fast, were all something new and innovative, being *cool*.

PS: SNES is the best.

Still, you'll ALWAYS have good games coming out of the pipeline. What's one man's trash is another man's treasure.

Hmm...

And well, no it hadn't declined. Just changed. There is many new games I like as much as the old classics.

I wouldn't say that the games are becoming easier. And when they are too easy, people always find a way to make it harder. This wasn't that possible in older games. And newer games aren't short, well not shorter than older one. I'll take the game I'm currently playing (Tales of Symphonia), and it's nowhere near short (Took 37 hours to finish CD1).

I would even have to debate this. The main difference is that most games out there today have a save function, which makes the games seem shorter today than they were back in the heyday of the NES. Think about it--Contra is about a 15-minute playthrough, the first Ninja Gaiden can be done pretty quickly, and even the original Legend of Zelda can be done in one sitting if you know what you're doing.

Ok, let's just say that all videogames had ceased production after the SNES, this means you wouldn't have...

Zelda:Ocarina of Time
Grand Theft Auto (any iteration)
Metal gear Solid
Ico
Any Bemani games
Final Fantasy VII,
Super Monkey Ball
Fable
*through gritted teeth* Halo
Conkers bad fur day
Mario 64
Katamari Damacy

So.. is gaming going downhill? I hardly think so. In fact I think we're approaching the peak of gaming excellence. On my PS2, not only can I play MGS, FFVII and Ico, but I also can play an arcade perfect version of MK2 and Smash TV... ARCADE PERFECT!! All I need is for Nintendo to release a GC version of Mario All Stars (with Super Mario World 1,2 and 3 with mario 64 too) and I'll be in heaven!

I wouldn't say they're making the worst games ever. In fact, I think a lot of them are really good. I also think the SNES was the best ever by far, but I've begun to suspect that is largely due to it being such a large part of my childhood. Similarly, I think Thundercats kicks ass and own several T-shirts despite the fact that it's really not that good. =(

The only decline I can really feel pretty sure about is that in game length. Which is a pity. But there are still some nice, long games... it just seems to be less popular now.

What do you think the best console is? I think it's the SNES. With the age of 128-bit graphics, you might think I'm nuts, but it has great classics such as the Seiken Denetsu series, Final Fantasy II, III, and V, Super Mario World, Super Mario Allstars, Super Mario RPG, Chrono Trigger, etc. The list just goes on and on. These games beat all the new games without the need for fancy graphics. Why do you think this is? I think it's because game companies suck at making good games now. They lost the talent they once had. Square Enix will NEVER make ANYTHING as good as Chrono Trigger and Nintendo will NEVER top Super Mario World or Super Mario Bros. 3. I think the game quality of games has seriously diminished, so they just work on fancy graphics. I predict that awesome looking Zelda game will be much too short and too easy. I predict that the next system will have the best graphics in the world, but the worst games ever. Companies need to tap into their previously obtained talent and actually work to create a really good game. It should have a bunch of people coming up with ideas. If it's not 100+ hours it's canned. If it doesnt have Doom III quality graphics it's canned. If it doenst have an awesome storyline and style of play better than CT, then it's canned. If it doesnt have a better soundtrack then CT, then it's canned. And the people should keep on coming up with ideas until it meets ALL the criteria. They shouldnt be allowed to eat or even go to the bathroom until the ideas are perfected. Then the game should be put into production. It should take as long as they need. They will NOT be allowed to cut out things to make the game come out faster. Then an awesome game will be created. Who's with me? Who likes this idea? Let's all go down to Nintendo of Japan with this! Lets raise our signs and start riot! Awe... I'm too lazy for that! Anyways: What do you think this perfect game might look like? In your eyes what would this game be like and be about and what kind of game would it be? Lets hear some ideas.
