Color = Good
Size = Worst

Its really too big, *IF* you are really going to make a scrollable layout, your base layout shouldn't be too big, it will eats up some connections of slow users..

Then again, it really looks like "cut n paste" layout to me... Try to fiddle a bit with Photoshop Filter effects(Blur, Pixelate, etc)

My 2 Cents

It depends if you want to make it stretchable or scroll and if you want to try the transparancy/grid method or just try and have a clean background for the text from the start.
But from the original picture, yes, doesn't matter which course you take, you still have to modify it with cutting and fixin' stuff. You may not need to use more pictures, it depends on how you put it together. Impossible to say right now.

Jizuko, these modifications you speak of, would they require me to use different images? Or the same ones with parts cut out/resized?

It's gonna need a LOT of modification. It needs to get a proper text box, it needs to be cut down in size a lot. Just that is pretty much a rehaul of the whole layout. Considering scrollbarlayouts isn't that popular so if you don't want that you're going to have to modify it even more to make it look acceptable to be a stretchie.

As for the graphical aspect and not the practical or "look and feel"; it kinda looks like two pictures on eachother. They don't blend in that good.

I didn't say it was crap, I just said it needs modifying. Yea, it's got potential, of course it does. Just not in it's current state.

Maybe I'm the only one that sees potential here. Yes, with modification, but still, I see a lot of potential.

WHERE DOES THE TEXT GO? Sorry, but you haven't explicitly stated that vital aspect of the layout design. If you want a text box over it all... eep. Jizuko pretty much summed it up, that would be difficult with the high contrast background(black and white). Unless you want the text in that white area under where it says metal gear solid 3, then you have to make that white take up a lot more room, and make the people on the left smaller, split them up, and use some layered divs for the background. This way when it stretches, the torn dark grey commando would align with the bottom, and the faces would stay at the top.
Overall I think it's a bit cluttered, but you can make it work.

Where's the text go?

You'd have to modify something to not have so much contrast or as apparent so you can get something like black text on there...otherwise it's not going to show up very well unless you bold your text (which isn't really a great idea).

Modifying what's there would work though.

See, I think it's possible, but it would need some modification. You'd be best not to put text over the images, if you can avoid it..... or put as little text over as possible.

so what YOU are telling me is that my layout wont work the way it looks now or the way I want it to?

Okay, a few things. It's too big, it's frickin huge, it's almost a wallpaper. And where will the text go? I can't see any place on that image where you can find good colors for readable text. You'll have to make a very high transparancy and even so, since the image contains black AND white, it's almost impossible without like 90% opacity.

As for transparancy in browser, don't do it. There's is specfic code for Firefox users, there is specfic code for IE (which also makes the whole table AND the text transparant) and there's probably a specfic one for opera. Gif don't support half-transparancy so it's either off or on with that. PNG supports it but only in modern browsers (IE is not a modern browser).

That's why nowadays, if I want to have something transparant looking, I make a grid. Even Ace uses a grid.

Actually, to be quite brutally honest, I have never used CSS ever before and have never even had it in any of my layouts.

CSS'd do the trick. Are you familiar with CSS? It'd probably be the neatest and most elegant way to do it, and if you want to be really smart about it, host the code here, using the board image hosting

CSS will also allow you to pick fancy link colors and blockquotes which is always great fun

Oh, I guess I forgot to mention that I don't really know what kind of coding I would need for this to stretch and the gif transparency trick you were talking about.

Yeah, I likey it. (I am also a Metal Gear fan)

I look forward to seeing it in action

Well, I don't need the scrollbar. But do you think everything else as far as colors and such go, are fine?

There are workarounds for transparency, as I don't think transparency works in all browsers and things anyways. I'ved used gif backgrounds with transparency before to workaround the semitransparent thing.

And that layout'd definitely be possible. I don't much like the scroll bar though, and I think it would be workable to create a layout that is very similar and stretchy...

Here are blueprints. Is it possible for me to have a semi transparent window in there for text? And moreover, can this layout work as it is? I need a lot of help please.
