Not a too good idea ,,, You never know what hackers will be able to do in future
It might be better to do it just other-wise. Shutdown all unneccessary ports and open only the most important ones. And regularly Windows Updates, renewing antivirus of course

Check your router's manual about "port forwarding". Even if you configured the router's internal hardware firewall to bypass some applications to connect to the internet; they require certain ports which might be not opened.

ZSNES for example uses port 7845 by default when it's coming to Netplay.
So go into the messengers' options, write down the ports and open the ports inside your router. The router's user interface can either be accessed on the device itself or likely using a webbrowser usually with a "link" to the router.

Windows XP also provides some firewall protection. You can try to disable it by going to network connections, right clicking on the LAN connection, select properties, click the advanced tab, and then uncheck the box to disable windows built in firewall.

If that too fails, have you tried to initiate Direct IM via AIM?

Your router is probably also doing firewalling....

Don't worry, direct connecting and sending files is a security risk, and you're best to find alternative ways of doing it anyways..

I just got Comcast Cable Internet yesterday and the routers in my room.

I can't direct connect or send files through messangers because I keep getting firewall bullshit.

But I don't have a firewall installed.

How do I get it so I can send files and crap?

My mothers computer lets me (we are on the same network) but mine doesn't
