Many, many times!

UPDATE!
New cable, still can't access the internet.

I tried to connect the DSL modem to the laptop, installed the drivers for it and tried to connect to the internet with the laptop.

Would it? Would it fuck!

Any ideas? My next step is to send it back to toshiba (its only just come back from being repaired by them last week!)

well, I don't think the cable would give out unless you touched it any way. As another suggestion, I'm guessing you've tried to restart the desktop computer?

Hmmm, tried it, didn't work. I THINK its a cable issue, cos the cable is a bit battered.

You need to give your laptop a gateway. Without a gateway, there is no way it can connect to the internet because it has no where to connect to. So, try setting your gateway of your laptop to be 192.168.0.1

Right, the facts:

  • I have a laptop and a pc.

  • The PC is connected to the internet (512kbps broadband)

  • The laptop connects to the pc via a crossover cable.

  • Yes it is all set up properly

For the past coupla months its worked absolutely perfectly, no problems whatsoever.

Today I was on the laptop browsing the internet and I went out to do a little shopping, so I shut down the laptop, but left the pc on.

I came back and now the laptop isn't connecting to the internet BUT it can access and see the other machine, whereas the PC can't even see the laptop. So I run the network setup wizard on both computers (pc first). On the pc the first time I run through the wizard (with the "this computer connects directly to the internet" option) and it says "cannot compelte setup wizard." Every time. It works the second time. I run the wizard on the laptop, with the "this computer connects to the internet via another computer or gateway" this then finishes properly first time.

Still can't connect, so I go and check out the IP addresses of each.
Main PC:

  • IP adderss: 192.168.0.1

  • Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

  • Default Gateway: nothing.

Laptop:

  • IP address: 169.254.238.220

  • Subnet mask: 255.255.0.0

  • Default gateway: nothing.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but when you run the wizard it assigns the same root IP to the client machine as it is on the host machine bar the last .*, eg. it should read:
Laptop:

  • IP address: 192.168.0.2

  • Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

  • Default gateway: nothing.

I changed the laptop to the above but it still isn't working!

Any ideas greatly appreciated, I'm stumped and I thought I knew my way around a network!
