I would suggest that you try the Bonus Island if you haven't yet. Some pretty challenging levels there.

Exactly, lower the version number the less you should expect of it.

Some sound effects could be better, but after all it have it's potential.

And there is a level editor too, nice.

The reason that the game "feels the same" the whole way through is because this is only version 0.1.2.

Trust me, as long as it stays in development, it'll improve. Pretty good for 0.1.2 though.

Hot damn this game is fun. So very fun. I'm at the third level, just got it. Will edit this post later.

EDIT:

After beating the first (and unfortunately only) world, I must say the charm died long ago. The main problem is that all the levels feel the same, and thusly you bore so easily when playing it... Really, Mario's good because of its variety. In this you always fight the same few enemies in one of three backgrounds that with the exception of the fireballs in the castle are no different than each other... At least the original Super Mario Bros. had the occasional water level and its worlds weren't obscenely long to the point of tedium...

Is there anything that there is not a open source clone?

Since i'm a big Mario fan, I download the Windows binary of this... and maybe I test it on my Linux PC too. (i'm using the Windows one more for being honest... )

I have that game and enjoyed to play it. It has a very good Super Mario feelin' IMO and some levels are a nice remake with very good graphics.

(title fun, hehe)

I just discovered an awesome game called Super Tux. It's basically a Mario clone with a penguin named Tux (Tux = Linux mascot) and the enemies are different, but it's easy to tell what the Mario equivalent is usually. It's only at version 0.1.2 right now, but it's already an awesome game. Can't wait until 1.0!

I would highly recommend trying it unless you don't like sidescrolling, Mario-like games. (Are there such people? )

The game is distributed as source, Red Hat RPM, and a Windows binary. The site to it is here: http://super-tux.sf.net/
