Most computers I've seen running WinXP, including mine, will access the floppy drive randomly. It usually happens during memory-heavy operations, so I suspect it's a bug that may be related to swap files.

If your virus scan for that random access doesn't work...try using something like HouseCall which is an online always up-to-date scanner.

I'd half agree with #1 with neo...it could be that...or it could very well be like my processor fan (aka: I need to get a new one). Sounds like a very loud grinding noise that happens from time to time because it's catching on something or something in it is wonky, but at the moment it's not anything threatening. Alternatively, you could try opening up you box and cleaning out all the dust that's in it...because I can guarantee you...if you haven't done that...that would be the first place you would want to start. That could very well solve your problem as it did with my fan the first few times.

Hold your nose too...and I hope you don't have dust allergies.

Well, it IS an 6-year-old powerstrip. Haven't dampened it yet. But I'll try. I do have a virus scanner, so I'll check. Hmm.

1. A humming noise...sounds like the power supply is ready to go. Either that or your case is vibrating. When you try to dampen the side of the case, does the sound go away? If so, then it is the case. Otherwise, I'd say the power supply because that is what happened to my dad's power supply shortly before it kicked the bucket

2. As for randomly access the floppy drive, do you have a virusscanner?

3. For Mandrake help, um...i can't help you. Maybe a mandrake linux help forum might help you.

1. Sometimes, when I boot my computer (6 year old P2/450) it will make a funny humming noise. It sounds like a mix betweem the computer accessing a CD and loudly accessing a floppy. It hasn't hurt my computer, but I don't know if it's a bad sign.

2. The same computer will also randomly try and access the floppy drive. At least once a day, the floppy drive will start making noise and the light will flash, but there's no disk in there.

3. On another computer, I just installed Mandrake Linux 10. I chose the correct mouse in setup, the mouse worked in setup, and then I boot up and the mouse won't go. I tried pressing the Windows key to get the menu (in KDE) and used the arrows to try and get to the control panel to reconfigure it. I go to Settings (is that the name?) then Configuration (is that the name also? My mind sucks), and then the menu closes instantly. All other menus embedded that far stay open.

I would appreciate any help.
