Something that random, alternating between restarting or just freezing, could be any number of things--an overheating CPU, bad RAM, a dying power supply. When it happened to me, I found out it was my power supply...more specifically, the connector that plugs into the motherboard. It was an old AT-style power supply, and had been used for a number of years with several motherboards, and the contacts had apparently become dirty or corroded and burned themselves black.  The board wasn't getting enough power, which caused the random lockups and reboots. The same thing happens to some old arcade machines after a while (in fact, I think that's what prompted me to check the plug in the first place).
I'd suggest you do what everyone else said first (update drivers, check for viruses, maybe reinstall XP). If that doesn't help, have a professional look at your system, unless you feel comfortable poking around inside the thing. |

My computerw had a virus, and it was quite unstable. However the worst thing happening was the explorer.exe restarting. 
Now I may sound silly, but try to clean your computer for viruses. If it find any but can't remove it tell us what virus it is. And do a spyware check-up.
Hardware bugs is also possible, one of my computer have a "dying" harddrive (or I think it's dying). Win 2000 crashes on that one with a error about closing down for "preventing damage on the HD".
You can set Win XP somewhere so it shows bluescreens instead of restarting. BSOD is still there, but Microsoft chagned it in the home versions that it would just restart. Probably becuse most home users couldn't make sense of the BSOD's.  |

WinXP isn't really known for major bugs like that... I'd say it's a hardware problem. If it were software, it'd just be a zillion little bugs.  |

The obvious answers would be to check for both spyware and viruses - if your PC was particularly screwed up then that could be a cause. There could also be a driver conflict but that doesn't sound like one to me.
Failing that, backup all your data and do a re-install of XP to see if that'll cure the problem. |

That is the WinXP version of the BSOD, welcome to our world. There really isn't any way to fix it that I know of, just update all your drivers and update WinXP to Service Pack 2 if you haven't allready. |

My WinXP keeps freezing, or spontaneously restarting without warning. Sometimes it is within a minute of runtime, others, I can go for hours on end. Does anyone know what to do about this? |
