I rather like F-Prot, myself. Only the DOS version is free, but I know how to use a command prompt, and you can't beat free.  |

I'm using the German AntiVir scanner, which is also available in an english version.
It is free, very small and doesn't suck up too much system resources at all like Norton AntiVirus. NAV might be good, but its qualities got less good over the years - and, yes, I'm comparing a free with a pay-"ware" virus scanner 
The AVGuard is active and tracks every time you open a file, instantly displaying a warning with options, when the file is infected. And if you feel disturbed by it, right-click and disavle it temporarily.
The only disadvantage is the update, since you need to load the full virus definitions, when they are new ones, fully and you will have to update manually - but there is the scheduler which allows you automatically do that whenever and as often you want per day - then, unlike starting AntiVir Interner Updater by hand, it downloads new definitions automatically and installs them  |

Anything recent by McAfee, hands-down. Can't beat it. Haven't been able to since my old 286 days when it found the old viruses like STONED on it.
I've got 8.0 Professional on here. If you're not opposed to it using a portion of your CPU all the time (it sucks a good 2% or so on here constantly, so it's probably better on better breed systems) then I'd get that. |

All you need to do is set it to a minute or two in the future and use the /interactive option. There is no need to log off. |

You can gain access to directories such as "system volume information" by changing the permissions. I did it a while back on my brother's computer.
You can also (ab)use the at command to spawn a command prompt running as SYSTEM. |

So, does anyone have any? I've tried AVG which was pretty good but when it found a virus it put it in the virus vault which I think is in system volume information directory on c:\, the annoying part is that I can't access that dir, not even with administrator login. So, every now and then I get this popup and annoying sound that I got a virus in system volume information but I can't remove it, and to remove viruses in the virus vault I have to purchase the professional version 
I've also tried norton antivirus which sucked, it was so annoying because it interfered in basically anything I did, oh hey, you're moving a file, MAYBE IT'S A VIRUS DOING IT?! I BETTER SCAN THAT 700mb FILE BEING MOVED!
So, anyone got any recommendations on antivirus programs? If you want to recommend AVG, give me a good copy because I can't find any serials for the newest version  |
