okay I think we are missing the point of the thread though

to play on battle.net you just need an internet connection

to play like in a house, THEN you need to setup a LAN....

which yeah... requires nothing more than a star topology networking device, hub, switch, etc....

ethernet cards and cables

and assigning ip's to the machines

I'm surprised at that comment. After dealing with some of the people that come on IRC and some of the NinjaAE types that sign up for the board, I figure you would have realized that there is no end to the things that some people dont know.
Yeah, exactly... some people are STILL asking how to pronounce Acmlm

Ok, I need to step in as well.

Firstly, LAN is just a term people use to describe the a collection of two or more computers connected in a way that allows them to transfer data from one to another. Both are usually in the same same "subnet". You don't really need to care about the subnet part unless you get into netowking in detail. Also, you do not need DHCP to setup a LAN. I don't know where that idea came from, all you need are unique IP's to the PC's. First of all, Windows assigns a non-routable IP if there is no DHCP server available on your connection. And secondly, it's easy as pie to set the ip yourself. Just make sure that each IP you set is different. If you want to play WC3 on a LAN... You have one of two choices.

1) Setup your own LAN. Requires a HUB, more than 1 computer, and both computers have to have a Network Card and 2 cables to go from each PC to the HUB (usually Cat-5)

2) Grab one of the free tools on the net that allow you to creeate a virtual LAN over the net, such as lancraft, or battlelan. They have instructions that should tell you what you need to doin order to play a warcraft 3 game using the LAN option.

Hope this helps.

That's why I posted that. I would assume if he's asking that, he's too cheap to buy the game

obviously Tomguy... any moron knows that.....

but playing on Battle.net has NOTHING to do with Lan....

and Bass seriously... if you are gonna spend 20 bucks on some 4 port BS piece of crap switch.... just spend 50 for a decent swtich with a router built in

I don't know where you're buying your switches. I've seen them go for under $20.

okay wow... I didn't reply to this thread earlier cause of the sheer idiocy displayed in like the first 2 posts... but now it has reached such an indeterminate level I feel I must inject some "smart" into the thread

1) any Broadband router you buy will have a built in DHCP Server
2) Routers cost about 40 dollars... not 9872349872347 like you tards keep saying
3) Most Switches cost as much if not more than a cheap 4 port router
4) so buy a router anyway
5) then you can share your broadband internet connection
6) you only need "LAN" to play other people .. on .. just that LAN...
7) to play on battle.net you just connect to battle.net it's simple

Doing DHCP on a home network is a really bad idea. DHCP serves no real practical application with less then 10 client machines and, in addition, it would make it far easier for someone to break in (a wardriver for example). People should not be lazy and just do manual config. My linksys router has DHCP -OFF-

Don't get a router unless you plan to network all your machines to share an internet connection. For just home network gaming, a switch should be all you need.

You COULD have a PC w/2 NICs in it serving as a router/DHCP server, I have my parent's machine at home set to do that - line in from cable -> their PC -> switch -> my 2 PCs

Nah, you just need to manually give them different IPs (like 192.168.0.1, 192.168.0.2, etc...), and give them the same subnet info and you're ready to go.
So, if you have more than one comp that can play it, or friends willing to bring their comp, all you need is a hub (fairly cheap), one ethernet cable per computer, and each computer needs its ethernet card. You can even find kits with pretty much all of that included.

Either one should do fine. And I think it's possible to get a crack that'll let you play local LAN games with a copied version, but you won't be able to use it online.

what is the difference between a router and a hub? I would think a hub would suffice for a LAN that doesn't need internet access?

I got a net cable (100') for $1.95 + ship (~8) off eBay...

edit: without that decimal it looks expensive

My router was 100$, and to network the computers we needed 50 feet of cable, wich was about 45$. ANd finally the ethernet adaptor wich came around 10$. The whole setup was pretty expensive, and I dont really suggest it if you only want to play games.

$ = canadian

Some LAN cables(Ethernet). If your computer is old then you might need to buy an Ethernet Adaptor, wich isnt really expensive. And you will most likely need a router.
