Not just the vocals but the sound of the music as well. Although Opeth does have a lot of clean vocals, and there are bands with death vocals that aren't death metal (like metalcore band The Red Chord).

Anyway...as if it needed to be said...Mikael

Yeah, with vocals like the ones they have, Opeth is certainly not prog. Although, they do seem to have some progressive influences at times.

Correction: Opeth is progressive death metal, or at least many would agree to this term. Supposedly their earlier stuff is more black metallish, but I haven't listened to any of that, even though I own My Arms, Your Hearse... BUT, I'm slowly picking CDs out of that big stack of unlistened CDs and putting them in my CD player! Tonight I listened to the digipak re-release of My Dying Bride's Turn Loose the Swans, and wow, am I ever impressed.

First of all, I want to suggest Opeth to you. They are progessive and not power metal but nearly everyone I meet who was in to power metal has enjoyed their music.

Opeth.

Anyhow (just listing what I haven't seen other people suggest).

Control Denied
Nightwish
Heavenly
Lost Horizon
Fairyland
Iced Earth

Iced Earth and Nightwish are 50/50. For each good song they have, they have two horrible ones.

I haven't heard a whole lot from Fairyland, Lost Horizon, or Heavenly but out of the 5-8 songs I have heard from each, I can say Lost Horizon is the better of the three but I'm still interested in buying ablums from all three bands.

I don't think anyone has mentioned them, but check out Gamma Ray. They're a German band and they're pretty damn good. I personally like "No World Order". Kick ass album. I'm almost positive you'll like them.

Oh, and has anyone heard of Edguy?

My old Dorm mate was the biggest Metal fan I've ever met (about 300 Cd's all metal bands), and we often used to have a chuckle to a band called "ManoWar" they were a power metal band, whith extremely cheesy lyrics... sort of like... "WE SHALL VANQUISH THE DEMONS WITH THE POWER OF......METAL!"

You know: Things like Sonata Arctica, Blind Guardian, Symphony X, and the like. I love the style of music and I love how they actually know how to sing. Anyone have any other suggestions?

Out of the three you mentioned, only Blind Guardian falls under Power Metal

Sonata Artica and Symphony X are Progressive Metal. For more on this, check out Dream Theater, Queensryche, and Liquid Tension Experiment.

For more Power Metal... Check out Judas Priest, Metal Church, Savantage, Helloween.

I would check out Iron Maiden too, technically they're part of the NWOBHM (early 80's Britsh Metal) but I have a feeling you'd like them anyways.

About the singing question: There's not as much screaming in Power Metal as in most of the newer genres of metal, and usually it's a more high-pitched scream than the low growled screams of today.

Nightmare: There's a number of good reasons to hate pop music, and you've mentioned none of them.

lol I love Iron Maiden. I downloaded some LTE and it's pretty good. I'll check out those other bands you mentioned.

I'm shocked that nobody has mentioned Hammerfall, Rhapsody or Grave Digger yet. I wasn't too impressed with Helloween when I saw them at Wacken, but Grave Digger blew me away

Oh, thank you for helping me out there.
I'm not really for sure but I think that Demon Hunter has a Power Metal sound to 'em.

Most power metal vocalists don't know how to sing. Falsetto? Please. I haaaaate constant metal falsetto. Bruce Dickinson really knows how to sing though, but his voice isn't artificial. Awesome vocalist right there.

I would like to second the recommendation for Helloween. Fucking classic.
