The kind of metal I like most is hardcore metal. The Dillinger Escape Plan, Between the Buried and Me, Yakuza, Botch, The Red Chord... Haven't delved too deeply into the style, but I really love what I've heard.
I dig death metal and its variants too... Nile, Arsis, At the Gates, Death, Cryptopsy, Capharnaum...things like that. Also into some black metal, more so the experimental stuff like Sigh, Solefald, and ...and Oceans, but I also rock out to Emperor, Dissection, and yes, Cradle of Filth as well. Lately been getting into way more metal than ever before... I have quite a few CDs I haven't even listened to yet.
Also love stuff such as Strapping Young Lad (aggressive Canuck metal), Devin Townsend (poppy Canuck metal), SikTh (metal + hardcore + nu-metal + progressive + jazz + craziness + Muppets), Raunchy (extremely talented Danish nu-metal), Mastodon (dirty south rock'n'metal?), Children of Bodom (power metal with death/black vocals?), and classics like Iron Maiden, Testament, Exodus, and so on. Could go on, but that's tiresome.
But that's just metal.

That's why I like Stonesour more. That, and Corey makes MUCH better use of his amazing voice in his sideproject.
Finntroll. A band that I have been meaning to check out but for some reason or another, I hesitated. But after this thread, I'll go check them out.
Anyway, I downloaded both their (Ensiferum) self titled album and Iron. I like it. I can't say it's any better than other music like this I've heard from that region, but I still like it nonetheless. I couldn't expect any less from Finland, they have some amazing bands. |

You should, Immortal are very, very good. Sons of Northern Darkness is one of the few albums I can listen to on repeat forever.
What sort of things are people into around here? I prefer Death/Black metal, but I also like bands like Dream Theater. |

Ah, sounds like it's in the Fintroll vein... In other words, listen to it with headphones on and hide it so none of your friends know you have it.
Random thoughts about other bands:
Metallica - Without these guys (Especially in thier early James Hetfield / Dave Mustaine / Cliff Burton / Lars Ulrich lineup), Thrash Metal would have never been founded as a genre, or at least it would have been much less popular and probably a lot worse overall. Even if you don't like them, they did a LOT for metal pre-black-album.
Slipknot - Decent band, but the masks remind me of Kiss. Stop trying to build a sub-culture around your music and just PLAY already.
Children of Bodom - I thought they were good until I heard the singer start "singing". If you can tolerate that voice they're great, but I really can't. And yes, they are very technically proficient with thier instruments. |

My sister's got some Finntroll CDs... I forgot about that. She's also got Immortal and other black metal stuff... I should borrow them.
I highly doubt Martyr and TYOOL are Christian bands. But then, I'm not all too familiar with them...I just like what I've heard. |

Just to get my opinion of Ensiferum out of the way, they are pretty good, but Finntroll are better, if you haven't checked them out yet, do so! Go to The Finntroll Homepage and learn more.

Blah. I put the statements in the wrong order but meh. I don't like Children Of Bodom and I never have. I'll give the guitarist props for having talent but the band is still way too overrated. |

So now apparently, according to Apple, Alexi Laiho isn't a talented lead guitarist. Funny. And COB's keyboardist isn't skilled and has no musical abilities either.
Those two make the band. While COB doesn't write the greatest songs around, they're efficient and the two mentioned are definitely good at their instruments. |

Metallica is ONE of the greatest bands of all time. And don't bring up the whole "They're not good anymore blah blah blah". It happens to 99.9% of bands that have been around for a good while.
Anyway, as far as Slipknot goes, I listen to them. But I'm not a total die-hard fan. I was back in high school, but that was over four years ago and I've been exposed to soooo much more music since then and I can say now that they're decent, but nothing to freak out over. I can't really say they did a lot for music itself, they're just another band as far as I'm concerned. They put on one kick ass show though. =D
Anyway, I definitely plan on checking out this band. S'matter of fact, I'll go look for it after I'm done with this post. Why?

Mainstream doesn't matter really, its the musicial talent of the band.
Slipknot, has very little musicial talent in my eyes, but than again so does Children Of Bodom. I find both bands extremely overrated but since I never pass a chance at hearing a new band, I'll download some songs by Ensiferum.
