For temporary problems an alternate file viewer might help; but if that happens again, follow neotransotaku's advice - reinstalling Windows helps not only solving that issue, but also might fix other errors and clean up the registry

I'm using SpeedCommander (Shareware), it's way faster than Windows Explorer, offers more features and is simply much more convenient to use (it even unzips archives inside the viewer without running WinZip or WinRar externally)- plus it has a really good search function; like when you deal with ROMs and IPS-patches in a major ROM directory

And sure, you can actually use Firefox as a file browser. But that isn't reccomended...

If it get's corrupted it won't start at all. This happened on a Win98 computer I have.

You should check for spyware anyway if you hadn't, there may be junk left even after the system restore.

I have no clue what the problem was, but it turns out that a system restore checkpoint fixed it.

Thanks guys.

Do a full spyware/virus scan, remove any Explorer add-ons, and if need be reinstall Windoze. A DLL problem is most likely, though the EXE could be corrupted.

sounds like you may have spyware or something in that order because if Explorer.exe crashes and then reloads, then explorer.exe is using some file that when you do something, causes explorer to crash. I have been developing a DLL that explorer.exe shouldn't be using but does use it. so when I forget to un-register the DLL, explorer tries to use the DLL and crashes.

so as starters, try to check out what starts up and scan for spyware.

I use Firefox, and probably have longer than you.

Explorer.exe is part of the Windows operating system.

Try knowing what you're talking about next time.

Well, I don't know how to fix the problem, but I know how to remove it. Switch to Firefox. You'll thank yourself, I assure you.

Edit: ah, woops. Windows Explorer. My bad.

I have no clue what I did to cause it, but every time I open a new Windows explorer window, Explorer.EXE dissapears, I'm left with just my background, and then Explorer.EXE shows up again without the window I just opened.

Obviously, this means most functions I can perform on my computer are a lot harder now.

I'm using Windows XP Home, with all Windows updates installed to the best of my knowledge.

Any help?
