Actually, 0 is transparent, not black, it just looks black on a black background. Those three shades of brown are used for a sprite palette and not for the Mario palette, actually. I know because a few sprites draw from that particular area and I can't seem to recall anything on Mario having that color. Furthermore when I had a custom palette that changed those, it had no effect on Mario while still changing the sprite I wanted. But the other parts you mentioned definitely are. |

yep, its got (from left to right)
0. Black 1. white 2. black
3 shades of brown a few red, purple and peach colours. then some blue.
If you see this kind of layout (or something like that) then your on the right track |

Just open the editor. Now from the bottom line count 7 lines up. On that seventh line is mario's palette. If you want just change his palette thru the drop down list to the right. You will see what colors change...thats mario's palette. |
