Thanks *very much* Euclid...
now that I can use "zcompress"...
I can work around the other 2 problems!
I'll give ya credit when I release my Zelda hack!
For anyone who's interested in getting that "zcompress" program to work...

Extract Z3 GFX using Zcompress.. place zcompress.exe in a short directory (e.g. C:\zcompress.exe ---> where C = your hd letter).. then copy your zelda rom in that same place (e.g. zelda3.smc) then do the following:

1) Click start, then select run
2) Presuming you are using Windows XP, type "cmd" without the quotes,
otherwise if you are still using Windows 98, type "command" instead.
3) Now that you have a dos prompt go to C:\ (e.g. if you are in multiple directories ---> C:\Windows\System 32 <--- type "cd .." two times (again without the quotes).. Now you will be in your main hd directory..
4) Now to decompress the GFX type: zcompress 0 ROMFileName [FileToSaveAs] (e.g. zcompress 0 zelda3.smc AllGFX.bin).. Finally, when you have your GFX bin, you can edit the graphics with a tile editor (I use Tile Layer Pro).
5) Finally to recompress the GFX back in, redo parts 1,2 and 3 but this time type: zcompress 1 PCHexAddressToInsert ROMFileName [FileToInsert] (e.g. zcompress 1 87200 zelda3.smc AllGFX.bin)

1: "Link's graphics" in Hyrule Magic...
photoshop = nono
windows paint = nono

only paint shop pro (and maybe GIMP, but i haven't tested it on that) will retain the palettes properly (i've tried them both and they will give palette errors)

2: The "green background" colour in the LTTP overworld...
The green colour? Yeah i noticed those too.

Unfortunately you'll have to manually edit the gfxs itself to change the "object bg" to a different colour, it could be HM missing a few palettes, but i can't be sure.

3: Please give me a *detailed* step by step of how to use FuSoYa's decompression program... I am not familiar with these "command based" programs... I am running Windows XP... do I need to bring up the dos prompt?...

you *could* use that program, or you can rely on the edit blocks feature in HM (which contains all the gfx, provided you entered a valid number) For the number associated with the gfx, try that Hyrule Magic guide (sticky in this forum) or over at tekhacks forums the hyrule magic sticky thread.

And if you're still interested to do it here's what you do:
to decompress:
start->run-> type "cmd",
cd into the directory you want,
type "zcompress 0 "
that'll decompress the gfx for you, but be careful it doesn't work on zelda rom which has been expanded.
to compress:
same thing instead of typing "zcompress 0" you type something like "zcompress 1 67200" or something like that, i could haev gotten the files the wrong way around... experiment a lil.

Wheww, lots of typing.

While I am no expert on HM, I know you can edit Link's palettes directly. Once you copy in your image you should try tweaking those to get the desired effect.

Thanks for trying but...
no.
that does not not work.
The problem is I *can* copy it into a new file in Photoshop & I *can* edit it...
*but* it will *not* let me *copy* that edited image & then paste that edited image into Hyrule Magic!
Apparently, I must *save* the image before being able to *copy* it...
which then changes the pallette!...
so when I *copy* & *paste* it after saving...into Hyrule Magic...
the pallettes are crap!
Anyone know what I'm doing wrong here?
Is there a way to throw that edited image onto the clipboard?
*Please*

I know I hafta press "copy" & then "paste" it into an image editor..
I have been unable to paste the edited picture back into Hyrule Magic without serious pallette problems...
could someone *please* give a detailed step by step on how to do this correctly...
(I have Photoshop so... explain using Photoshop as the image editor)

all you have to do is NOT CHANGE THE PALLETTE WHILE EDITING GRAHPICS!

2: The "green background" colour in the LTTP overworld...
having changed *every* palette where there was normally green into red...
I am left with "squares" around the bottom of all static in-game objects (like trees)... the "squares" are I guess "transparent" & show the green "background" colour... my question is simple...
does anyone know "where" in the rom that green colour is decided...
I'd like to change it to red... how would I do this?

If someone could help me out with this stuff I'd be *very* happy!
Thanks for your time!
