perhaps...perhaps the game codes them in using ASM to tell it, "put this pixel there, put that one here, no, no, dude, that pixel in the corner needs to be here, not there..."
I've heard you can code ASM to put in pixels at certain areas. perhaps that's how they do it; set a two color palette (gray and transparent) and draw it with ASM. or the SWI log may be unable to detect the foot prints for some reason. i know vba has an oam viewer, if that could tell you the location of the sprite, then...
