That didn't limit me... I am already starting my second level.

You should at least play around with the palette headers and backgrounds. That way it looks somewhat different. Still doesn't look too bad. Good work.

The great point of YI is that it is a game that has a great variety of tiles, sprites, which allows us hackers make a lot of things and use our minds to make new and cool level ideas.

The only obstacle that is annoying is the byte limits. I'd like to add more stuff to the levels

Alright, thanks! Personally, I don't think new GFX are absolutely necessary yet. I loved the YI gfx a lot and I would like to see more levels using the current YI gfx. I mean, it's your choice, but don't feel as if it is very important, I'm sure you can make a lot of cool levels without new GFX.

For decompression, there's always FuSoYa's Lunar Compress.

One of the board's tallented asm hackers might bless us with an exgfx option, though it's likely not to be the practically limitless graphics addition that LM provides.

Any pics of your graphics work outside of YI?

@Mega Luigi: good point, they are really too easy to get I'll try to put normal coins there and the red one in other place


I'd like to know if there's a way to extract and insert the gfx, so I can make some gfx changes in YI

Also, I'm affraid we won't be able to add exgfx, coz i'm affraid the rom won't expand either?

I'm doin the paper-->draw--->scan thing you suggested Squash Monster. I draw very often, and I love to do it. I can show some of my work in YI then

This hack is amazing! This game is very better than the original YI. The levels have the same style from the Nintendo. I think this looks like an another game from Nintendo. Just one thing, in the first pic, I don't think a good idea put two red coins too easily (nothing against this).

That's looking pretty good. I hope things go smoothly.

As for the graphics, the number of games that have graphics that can even compete with Yoshi's Island is pretty low, and most have incompatable styles with YI. I think graphics changes probably will have to be drawn by hand rather than imported with rips. At least YI's style is pretty easy to mimic; a few felt-tipped markers (especially black), a box of good colored pencils (including normal and pastels), and a scanner would make it pretty easy. Of course, Photoshop has the tools to immitate that too.

Anyway, a bit of advice to YI hackers who don't want to get into art - experiment with the header. It might take a while, but you can get a lot of cool effects.

Since SMW hackers are adding YI GFX to SMW, why not add SMW GFX to YI?

Problem is that at the moment, it looks exactly like the old game. I loved YI and all, but you always hope for something new..

It'd be interesting to see YI with non YI-style graphics, though.

It is looking pretty interesting, nice work.

Although, I'm mostly only encouraged to play a hack when the graphics too are changed. Otherwise, t feels a lot like I'm playing the same old thing...
