Also, the ripper has spent many hours (well, I do because I want my rips to be perfect), ripping the graphics from games. So say I spend 1 hour ripping those bridges from DKC and someone comes along and rips them from my game in 5 mins. That would get me angry because of the hard work I spent ripping them.

Also, with sunnysides graphics, they are handdrawn so its 100% obvious that they would be stolen if permission wasn't given. I wouldn't want to spend hours drawing graphics only to see them in a glitchy hack.

I personally think that nintendo should be credited because they created the game engine, graphics, graphics from other games, and the entire layout for SMW. If not for them I dont think any of this stuff would be possible.

BTW, I think the screens looks great. Too bad some people here in the same community can't get along and just share some gfx.
It isn't so much that they can't share, but that they were never even asked. And actually, many of us (well, me) will only keep the Mario and Yoshi GFX and redo everything else.

Well, I think there are generally two types of custom graphics.. ripped ones and handmade ones. For handmade ones, such as the Sunnyside graphics, I think the creator definately has a legitimate claim in copyrighting his work. Ripped ones are more problematic, since the ripper didn't actually create the graphics.. he just ripped them, obviously. But even so, I think it's appropriate that one get the ripper's permission to use the ripped graphics... but I'm too tired at the moment to really create an argument for this sentiment.

I seem to recall them being in Donkey Kong Country... But I haven't played it in awhile, so I could be completely wrong. Also, you have a really lousy attitude. Rips suck. I give out some of my graphics willingly (or did, until I just stopped working on stuff), but I can relate to people who want their stuff left alone. They worked hard on it, they don't want anyone stealing their work.

Okay, about the hack:

I think the way you used all the graphics is amazing! I see why you would want to borrow/use KT/anikiti GFX...They are amazing!!!! However I think you could easly create some awesome GFX your self...or rip them I really need to release a demo becuase I have a bridge set I ripped I dont want anyone else useing...

EDIT:

That wasn't meant to be directed at you. The bridge set part.

Those are kick-ass screenshots, I never was able to correctly pallette, although I have many, Yoshi Island GFX. However, they're right, you should've asked them for their ExGFX first before just putting it in, and credits don't really make a difference; I'm writing a sci-fi book and if someone took tons of my stuff and put it in their book, and then gave me a little section saying "Obvious Parts By (my name)", then I wouldn't be too thrilled. It's kind of like that, y'know? It's just not cool.

Just because you personally don't mind doesn't mean everyone should have the same preferences as you. I think anyone who is defensive over having their graphics ripped has a justifiable opinion.. largely because when other people use your graphics, the uniqueness of your hack is decreased, and you have a right to protest that fact.

Right, exactly. Some mind, and others don't. Until this topic, there was no real way of knowing that it was taboo to borrow from these specific authors. At least, I don't remember any accompanying text file when I downloaded the hacks explicitly stating anything along those lines, nor was there anything in the topics on this board that I got the hacks from. And considering that the graphics (for the most part) aren't original creations of the authors, it's really no different than lifting the graphics from the original sources. Personally, I would never do it, because it's just as easy to take from the originals as it is from the hacks, and I would rather situations like this didn't happen, but some people have different motivations and morals.

If they can use them better than me, then hey, that's cool, and if they can't, I'm still top dog with them so that's cool, too.

Not only that, but he also 'stole' GFX from one hack that had been tweaked and/or done by hand.

That right there would piss me off, especially if osmeone stole the underground GFX I made (previously to be submitted, but I'm not going to now just because it's not done and I don't feel like releasing it but to one/two people)

And yes, Knucks' right. YOU don't care.

You copied my YI plants idea see here

Anyway, the screens are very good, I'm marvelled with the so well done YI gfx. And appart from the fact that you ripped KT's, Anikiti's and Cwiarl's gfx, its all fine

Also, you can rip sets that nobody yet ripped, instead of ripping gfx ppl have already ripped

Soooo... They should allow you to use their GFX just because the demo is almost finished? Meh.

Hidden Mario, you really should ask them first if you're going to use graphics that they personally made, editing pixel-by-pixel. Ripping from the same games, and making the same color swaps is no problem, but imagine if you spent hours tweaking your own from-scratch sprites, only to see someone else use them without telling you? (Putting someone's name in the credits doesn't count as "telling them" IMO. You should e-mail them while you're still creating your game.)

I'm very sad to plagiarize Hack SMW to my ExGFX.
Although written also to the reply of KT, in his original GFX, the man is suffering troubles and making.
It is not good to ripping it and to use freely.
Although it seems that it ripping also from my Luigi's Adventure, please change into other ExGFX immediately.
If it seems that it does not correct, the release of "Luigi's Adventure" will be stopped.
Moreover, the release of "Luigi's Adventure (English version)" which the request had is also stopped.
This is a long thread. Click here to view it.
