Personally, I just use windows movie maker for compressing videos for web use. It can compress a 3min long video into about 3mb in medium quality mode.

Actually that's not a bad idea. A while ago someone did a similar thing with Final Fantasy, releasing mini-demos in the form of save states. Since the states contained most of the data, you could play fine as long as you didn't leave whatever area you were in.

Im pretty sure that it contains a save state, and that must contain all the current level data right? so, if you made short movies of single levels, then it should be fine. Just rename a rom to the same name as the zmv.

It worked with a zelda movie I just watched. Things went haywire as soon as it loaded data when it entered a new area cause the rom was not the same as the origional.

Its a cool concept, but i am just making a AVI using the SNES9x feature and putting together a music video for the release of my Zelda 3 hack. ZMV's dont have the ability to do what im looking for.

Here's a better way.

Use ZSNESW (Windows version)

Use SnagIt to record your video w/ record sound option.

ZSNES movies are unaccurate. They stop being accurate after 5 minues of the movie is passed..... After that, the .zmv movies go haywire and you see players get killed and stop moving and doing n00bish-like things, lol.

That is if that happenes to all ZSNES versions, or if that's just me.

If you have the video card and hardware you can record it onto a VHS by VCR. Though if your going to get the software/hardware just for this it'd be pricey, but if your going to use for other things you might want to look into it.

Screenshots are fine, I think, unless you were going to globally advertise your hack on telly or something

Hmmm.... I don't see this working at all. At first you could just release hacks, but then people wouldn't even bother downloading an IPS until they saw screenshots. Screenshots are smaller than the IPS file. Tell me if this makes sense:

mariohack.avi=12.3MB
mariohack.ips=3.4MB

Now tell me, would you download the first one to see if you wanted the second one? Doesn't make sense to me.

A Really great program that everyone who plays music, videos, edits music, or edits videos should have is Blaze Madia Pro. Just search Google.

With this awesome program, you can convert just about any common video and music file to any other format. Like .Mpeg to .avi, and vice versa. Its really great for editing too. You just need to extract all the frames (very easy to do, but it takes up a fair amonut of space) and then edit them how ever you want. I recommend editing them using Photoshop CS or 7.0. Or you can use powerpoint (a program that comes with Microsoft office XP). Then you simply open BMP (blaze media pro) and just put all those frames back into a video I make stick men videos this way.

You couyld also use paint and irfanview to do it, but it takes longer

How you do edit movies? I want to put text when Mario jumps uselessly.

THe .Avi's wouldnt be that big, if you just played a few seconds of various levels, and put them all together into a 20-60 sec video..maybe even less than 20..

I think the .zmv + .ips is a bad idea though

I tried doing something like that. I had the quality down to as low as possible (for one level) and it was... 3 megs, I think... and it featured Ed laughing in it or something like that... just playing around with it...

It would be good... but then again... not really. Good for seeing animations and stuff, but if edited poorly...

Basically a neat idea, but as said by Escherial,

Actually, a ZMV would work fine if you had a IPS patched version of the ROM for which the movie was recorded.[...]

you'd need to include the hack inside the obligatory ZIP or RAR archive.
But on the other hand:

How many people will watch the movie first than extracting the IPS file instead in first place, since they gonna have two choices ?

- Watch the movie
- Apply the IPS to a fresh ROM or using ZSNES' auto-patching feature

I think most of the people will play the hack immediately, since they first don't want to spoil themselves seeing the levels by watching that movie (and solution) and the IPS is almost here.

ROM Hacks are for playing, not for watching.

Distributing small movies might be good; but it is practically useless and a gimmick only.
You might add some nice other music to an AVI or WMA (recommended, since other formats are not that known and spread out; of course you don't need Windows Media Player only, a few other ones also can play these formats ) and only show some interesting parts of levels; along with some nice cutscene effects ...

Actually, a ZMV would work fine if you had a IPS patched version of the ROM for which the movie was recorded. In that case, you'd only need to distribute the IPS patch with the ZMV file + patch the original ROM with the IPS and it should work just fine.

Of course, you'd have to distribute your hack, which might defeat the purpose of making a movie for it.

Pardons to Juggling Joker if this is what he meant initially .

Your idea would work, with different formats. Think avi/mpeg etc...

I know avi is planned for Zsnes (might even be in one of the WIP's, but what about Snes9x?) so this could be a realistic thought.

ow, i thought it'd work with hacks since they have the same 'origin', the smw rom.

geez, i guess it wont work them

A ZMV requires the rom it was recorded with.

Like, as Nintendo and Sony, etc do, we could show videos of our hacks! Like, you make a zmv file of you playing your hack and put a link to us d/l it, i guess the gfx and exgfx are saved at the video, so you can use any smw rom to play it

It gives more emphasis of what your hack looks like than actually only screens

I'lll make a video of one recent level I made today, and if you guys like this idea, we can show our videos to the ppl see them
